Ratings

MPAA Ratings

  • Rated: (not rated) (adult content, language, brief nudity and/or sexual content)

Tentacle Ratings

A rough measure of how "Lovecraftian" the work is:

  • SS___ (Two Tentacles: Barely Lovecraftian; vaguely similar in tone, could be a very loose adaptation)

With an epigraph by Lovecraft ("Wise men have interpreted dreams, and the gods have laughed..."), based on the story "-30-" by Laird Barron (described as "a horror story with Weird elements"), this is actually just another surreal bunch-of-weird-stuff-happens-in-the-woods movie (though perhaps one of the better-crafted and more atmospheric examples of the subgenre). Still, between the weird, dreamy, atmospheric production and the weird occult research and cult backstory, there might be just enough here to remind viewers vaguely of Lovecraftian fiction....

Note: This rating is not intended as a measure of quality, merely of how closely related to Lovecraftian "Weird" fiction the work is.

Synopsis (SPOILERS)

 Spoiler Section (Highlight to Read)
Two scientists who share a romantic history are tasked with investigating unnatural animal behaviour on the seemingly deserted site of a disbanded murder cult's compound; tensions inevitably rise between them as strange things begin happening around the area, and the couple experience strange dreams, hear strange voices and sounds in the night, uncover bizarre artifacts at the site, receive sinister visitors with ominous information to impart, and observe wildlife behaving strangely; it soon becomes clear that one of the researchers' interest in the mysterious cult is more than academic, leading to a deadly confrontation before the standard enigmatic climax and conclusion for this type of film.

Notes

Comments, Trivia, Dedication

  • The film is loosely inspired by real life stories of scientists, working in isolation, who descend into confusion, paranoia, and madness, staring at nature so long that humanity ceases to make sense.
