MPAA Ratings

  • Rated: not rated (equivalent to perhaps PG or PG-13 for mild violence and language)

Tentacle Ratings

A rough measure of how "Lovecraftian" the work is:

  • S____ (One Tentacle: Has almost no direct connection to Lovecraft's work, but might supply ideas for more Lovecraftian plots.)

Only the parallel universe idea is remotely cosmic, some strange ruins make an appearance in a curious scene near the very ending of the film, and the plot itself ends on a bleak note, but the relatively low-key nature of the science fiction and horror in this film never quite make the complete leap into cosmic horror.

Still, the idea might be adaptable to a Call of Cthulhu RPG plot with a little modification and perhaps some invention.

Note: This rating is not intended as a measure of quality, merely of how closely related to Lovecraftian "Weird" fiction the work is.

Associated Mythos Elements

  • race: Human Cultists - the world the physicist discovers is a more violent place where murder is more common (the concept might be developed further into a world controlled by a Mythos cult)
  • location: one character is stranded in a nameless labyrinth in a parallel universe in one scene near the end of the film

Keeper Notes

  • The investigators are drawn into a plot involving a trail of mysterious deaths and the reappearance of a physicist's dead spouse, leading to the revelation that the physicist's invention of a device allowing for travel between dimensions has allowed a parallel-universe doppelganger of the spouse, a dangerous killer with a peculiar philosophy of life and death in the other universe, to roam free in our world, preying on the innocent.
  • An experiment with teleportation technology strands the investigators in a mysterious parallel world, similar to this one, but controlled by a violent mythos cult.
  • An experiment with teleportation technology strands researchers in a mysterious parallel world; the investigators are sent to rescue the stranded researchers before it is too late.
