Sovereign Military Order of Malta - or similar - as a campaign premise?

The Sovereign Military Order of Malta "is the present-day continuation of the medieval Knights Hospitaller." It's the only modern sovereign entity still able to issue passports yet possessing no territory. It operates a worldwide relief corps, as well as a Military Corps for medical duties in the field. Headquartered in Rome, it has diplomatic missions worldwide, and limited extraterritoriality in Rome and Malta.

Looks to me like the Order - or perhaps some secret analogue surviving since the Middle Ages - has considerable promise for a worldwide campaign structure. You could well imagine one of the medieval military orders being tasked to combat sorcery, and that legacy might have endured to modern times. I'm already considering a campaign for Pelgrane's Esoterrorists RPG where the core rulebook's Ordo Veritas in fact is such an order, supposedly long vanished like the Templars, but in fact enduring to the present day.

I've used an offshoot of them as a villain group with a much more extreme version of the concept that you have here.

Of course a better choice might be the Inquisition.....which was never disbanded but changed its name to "The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith ".

Is that the same organization as “the” inquisition? If so the video missed a few details...

It's the Roman Inquisition. The Spanish (and there were others, like the Venetian) was a separate organization.
