The Black Book GUMSHOE Online Character Tool is live

Recommended Posts

Travern

The Pelgrane-licensed Black Book from Northland Creative Wonders is online and ready for people to use to create and annotate GUMSHOE PCs.  While I'm in the process of trying it out, it's made a solid first impression on me.

Basic creation character is free and comes with these features:

  • Printable Sheets
  • Unlimited Characters
  • Mobile and Desktop Friendly
  • Ability Sorting/Filtering
  • Character Portraits
  • Supported Games: Trail of Cthulhu*, Night's Black Agents** (more to come)

The "Player" package costs a $20/year and offers these options for online play:

  • Spend Ability Points
  • Refresh Some of/All of Them
  • Track Health, Stability, Sanity
  • Character Notes

(Offline Access and Die Rolling are promised soon.)

The forthcoming "Game Master" subscription, which will include the "Player" package, is projected for release this autumn and will have:

  • View Player Character Sheets
  • Live Character Matrix
  • QuickShock Combat
  • Customizable Ability Lists

Incidentally, the Black Book is a product by the same software team behind Storybeats.io, the Ennie-nominated narrative-mapping software tool inspired by Robin D. Laws's Beating the Story and Hamlet's Hit Points.

* With Pulp and Purist Mode, Occupational Abilities, Occupational special features, and Credit Rating Bands

** With Previous Patron and MOS, Background Ability Rating suggestions, Cherries, Special Weapons Training, Covers and Contacts

The Player subscription is $20 a year, not a month.

I really like the setup so far, waiting for the GM package to roll out before I subscribe.

Thanks for the catch - I fixed my original post.

I really do enjoy what I have seen so far. I am waiting to see the GM subscription and how it works before I pass judgement on this fully. Hard to truly know how useful this will be without all the moving parts.

Fantastic. I've been trying to get an online game off the ground, maybe this will help.

Like the Fall of Delta Green update a lot - my only issues are that some of the Technical skills got misplaced into Academic, and that there isn't a place for non-standard/service character backgrounds. Otherwise, very solid.

Any word when the GM will be replaced and what the cost would be?

I would like to see Bookhounds support. The old one supported Bookhounds but has been turned off, which is a bit annoying.

We just launched support for the Yellow King RPG. GM Tools are in progress, there have been some complications but it is looking good. This is the third request for Bookhounds in as many days. I guess I need to look at that sooner rather than later...

I'd like to add another request for Bookhounds. Thanks.

The basic data entry for Bookhounds is complete. Now I am working on the rules changes that are different than normal Gumshoe. This includes things like the Forger getting default sub-abilities under the Art and Craft abilities, which I think implies a minimum point expenditure. Also, Credit Rating works a little differently and a couple more. I can't given an ETA better than soon, but it is getting close.

Awesome, I am about to (re)launch a Bookhounds campaign so this will really help my Players.

The Forger was always a bit unbalanced in that to create a "perfect" forgery you had to take a huge number of ultraspecialised skills; and what was "art" and what was "craft" also seemed arbitrary. I just let the Forger in my group have points in "art" and "craft" that could count for all of them.

I will be greedy now and ask if you add the new abilities from Dreamhounds of Paris too?

Just wanted to give an update and bounce a couple things off you folks who are interested in Bookhounds. I have all of the special rules work done with 2 caveats.

1) I required that the Forger put 3 points in Art and 2 points in Craft and the specializations are the ones listed under the Forger's Occupational Abilities. This is similar to the change to the Professor where he must spend two points in Languages for Greek and Latin.

2) The hard part was adding the new abilities to the existing occupations. The rules state that a player can choose to replace a fixed occupational ability choice, or one of their optional occupational abilities.Because code reasons,  I don't really have a way to allow both of those options. A rewrite I am planning to do will resolve this, but that is a ways down the road and I didn't want to hold this up. So, I added the new abilities to the list of optional occupational abilities. The work around to replace one of your fixed abilities is to set the abilities the way you want and accept that the point totals for your character will be off slightly.

I'm curious if anybody has any thoughts or feedback on these. I need to fix a bug in the base Trail of Cthulhu rules and do some testing. Unless people are really unhappy with the above caveats, I expect Bookhounds to be live in a few days.

That's good news, and may be handy for the Sotheran's event next month.
