Reign of Terror (Chaosium, Mythos during the French Revolution)

Recommended Posts

MOB

Reign of Terror is currently available in PDF. Following our usual method of distribution, if you purchase the PDF now, you get the full price of the PDF off when the print version comes out in about three-four months.

This is an epic two-part historical scenario for Call of Cthulhu featuring Mythos Horrors during the French Revolution. Reign of Terror is playable as a stand-alone adventure or as an historical interlude for use with Horror on the Orient Express. (HotOE backers were earlier given a free preview version).

Mark Morrison reckons this is the best Call of Cthulhu material he's ever written. This is a full-colour book, with some amazing artwork and maps:

When you buy Reign of Terror at Chaosium.com, you can also download the free Player Handouts Pack and the six pre-gen characters we've created for the campaign.

For those wishing to create their own characters and further explore the setting, Reign of Terror also features ten era-specific investigator occupations, including cleric, noble, and peasant, as well as guidance on social class, income, and weapons of the period.

The pre-gen characters that come with Reign of Terror are soldiers, each detailed with their statistics and motivations:

• Sergeant Renault, a levelheaded sergeant.

• Beaumains, an idealist.

• Dupois, an old soldier who drinks too much.

• Pressi, a romantic young soldier.

• Babin, regimental standard-bearer and bon vivant.

• Hugel, a resourceful provisioner (vivandièr).

I've got the PDF and started to read it, so far very interesting material (although so far I've only read up to p. 17). The cast is really interesting and I could be tempted to try a campaign in the 18th Century at one point.

• Hugel, a resourceful provisioner (vivandièr).

Minor typo to be corrected here: The masculin form should be Vivandier (no accent), but the feminine form Vivandière would take an accent.

As a former French as Second Language Teacher (for 13 years), I know those accent can be a right pain.

Many thanks - we have a Reign of Terror corrections thread over at BRP Central: https://basicroleplaying.org/topic/6761-reign-of-terror-corrections-thread/

We have a couple of weeks' window to catch errors before print. We'll review everything there and update the PDF accordingly before sending the book to print. (If corrections come in later than this, we will correct the PDF file and print files ready for reprints.)

----------
Thanks @andreroy for jumping on to BRP Central and adding your corrections there, it is much appreciated!

Any overlap with/leveraging of Hugo's Les Misérables?  This might be a good way to get my oldest to try out CoC---he's a huge Les Mis fan.

Les Mis is the 1832 Revolution, not the 1789 one...

There are quite a few French uprisings and revolutions and they're a bit hard to keep sorted.

Great review of Reign of Terror here:

"Morrison’s love for this work shines through, and a reader easily recognizes the care and painstaking attention he and his team spent on this project… (There are) times when the players — the actual players — will want to run screaming from the room. It’s scary and it’s creepy and it’s gross and it will definitely give your more impressionable players nightmares. Just like it ought to."

This is Victor Lesa's evocative and chilling cover art for REIGN OF TERROR, Chaosium's new Call of Cthulhu adventure supplement set in Revolutionary France.

Developed by Call of Cthulhu mastermind Mark Morrison as a secret chapter in the story of Horror on the Orient Express, REIGN OF TERROR has been designed for play with or without reference to that campaign. If used with Horror on the Orient Express, it provides an exciting and action-packed “living handout†that brings new insights and illuminates the players into the full horror of one of the campaign’s dire villains.

I've been ludicrously excited to get my hands on a hard copy of this. Great to see that the physical versions are out.

Quite enjoying the revolutionary shenanigans. Not much in the way of Mythos so far but I'm keen on the picking our way through the warp of history.

I'm not sure about the full colour Chaosium. I'm not saying it's wrong but I like the more sober presentation of earlier publications which to me better fits the horror genre.
