Good Podcast suggestions?

Recommended Posts

durek

I'm seeking some suggestions of good podcast to listen to either about the mythos or simply about the rpg and ideas.

I'm a long GM of many games and league organiser of mini games and always like to have something in the background to listen while I paint, write or do housework and I haven't really found anything good for this genre.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Durek,

from this site you could begin with the YSDC podcasts in the tabs above.

HP Lovecraft Literary Podcast is the obvious starting point for the Mythos, and I can also recommend the Double Shadow podcast (the related works of Clark Ashton Smith) and A Podcast to the Curious (MR James).

Miskatonic University Podcast is probably the core Call of Cthulhu podcast out there, and covers both mechanical and creative ideas as well as related topics.

The Good Friends of Jackson Elias is also relevant, especially for GMing inspiration.

You can't go wrong with the Ken and Robin Talk About Stuff podcast.

RPPR is another podcast worth to listen about gaming and with actual plays.

RPPR is a good source and they have a lot of Cthulhu(now more Delta Green).

BBC Documentary and Planet Money are good grabbags for details and trivia with occasional plot ideas.

Welcome to Nightvale, surreal small town radio, and Alice isn't Dead, supernatural thriller, are both good odd stories though in different tones. Limetown was another story, modern day conspiracy, and not bad but it's been over for a while or I haven't found the new season.

For other RPG ideas, System Mastery is a semi-weekly review of old games but I've gotten a lot of rules insights from them.

Improvised Radio Theatre... With Dice is an excellent general RPG discussion show, lots of thoughtful conversations and good insights. Co-host Roger BW also hosts the Whartson Hall "actual play" recordings, including some Cthulhu, on the same site.

If you're after inspiration rather than actual plays or podcasts about playing I'd recommend the Minnow Beats Whale Podcasts

Black Tapes

Tanis

Rabbits

Again thank you everyone for your suggestions, it will take me a while to go through and sample them all.

I LOVE Tanis, looking forward to Black Tapes, not sure of Rabbits though.

Rabbits is growing on me, but I prefer a Return of The Black Tapes. Point Mystic is another for the inspiration category and I also enjoy Two Hundred a Day; a podcast covering the 1970's show The Rockford Files. The hosts are game designers Nathan D. Paoletta and Epidiah Ravachol. The podcast covers an episode of Rockford Files with the first half a discussion of the episode the rest of the show discussing ways to tie themes and ideas from the TV episode into your game.

I'd also recommend LimeTown, although after series 1 it seems to have died....

I keep up hope for a return of Limetown, but it doesn't look good. The Message is another interesting single season podcast that could work as inspiration for horror gaming.

Listening to the message kills you

The same group did a second show called Life After that was not as good, but has a very interesting concept you could use for a modern game.

your deceased loved ones come back to you in digital format using their social media videos to recreate them

I've heard that there's a new PNWS podcast coming soon - seems to be a 'Nic and MK' investigate series (but not Tanis).

Edit: episode 4 of Rabbits has dropped today

Episode 8 of Rabbits has a reference to experiments to stimulate the pineal gland to extend human consciousness. Someone involved in this show is a HPL fan.

I would recommend "The Grognard Files" with Dirk the Dice. You can find it on Patreon.

It's a great nostalgic journey through the golden age of RPG. The fanzine they produced through Patreon was created as a replica of an early '80's White Dwarf with perfectly matched layout etc.

I'd like to plug my own podcast, PAN, which features tightly-edited, 10-to-20-minute episodes of original campaign actual play:

on iTunes (available through iOS' podcast app by searching "PAN")

https://itunes.apple...an/id1258343195

on CastBox (Android app--again, you'd have to search in-app)

A small tip =)

For those to whom English is not a native language – instead of listening to actual play podcast it may be a good idea to watch videos (there are some on youtube). They are much easier to perceive than audio records due to the possibility to see who’s speaking and follow the overall flow of a conversation and play.
