Arkham Horror: the Card Game (play report)

So a guy at my local game store went to some convention ran by Fantasy Flight and bought a copy of "Arkham Horror - the Card Game" which he ran as a demo last night. I went hoping it would be simple (see my thread on easy Mythos board games for more of what I'm looking to find) and I think it was easier than both Arkham Horror and Eldritch Horror, but still a lot of set-up and a ton of fun.

Apparently the main box comes with enough cards to build decks for 2 of the 5 investigators, so you need two copies of the box set to build four investigators. We had three players, so it was nice that we had a double-set to work with. I don't really understand these card games but guys at the table said it was similar in many ways to the LotR one, but since I've never played it I can't comment much about it.

You get three actions per turn, and these include movement, playing a card, drawing a card, gaining a resource chit, and so on. There is also an encounter deck so you constantly have things to overcome, which consumes a lot of cards and resource markers as you assist each other. Seems highly cooperative and the whole group needs to work together if you want a prayer of survival.

The scenario was designed to start us in a room and if we could do enough skill checks to obtain enough clues then we could get out. This led to a hallway attached to several rooms. I don't want to spoil anything but we wandered around a while and eventually got destroyed by the big bad guy. There are campaign rules so that if you move from one scenario to the next you can have carryover of character traits and such.

I didn't pre-order a copy because I don't think I understood the game quite enough to teach it and also because getting my group to play a card game is really hard, but it was a blast and I'm hoping to play it again sometime.

Anyway, I hadn't heard of the game before I saw the advertisement for the demo in the game store. Has anyone else had an experience with this game?

I recently picked up the Arkham Horror LCG at Dragonmeet and managed to play through the first scenario solo over the weekend. I loved it. It is so much more immersive than any of the other co-op LCGs that FFG have released. Cannot wait to play it some more!

I picked up the core box a few years back, and played a few games.

If memory served, I was soured on quite how difficult a Yellow/Blue deck was to beat, but it's possible this is due to a misreading of the rules.

I think you are thinking of the old (now discontinued) Call of Cthulhu Card Game. There is now the new Arkham Horror LCG!

Yeah, this game just came out in the past few weeks and it has no connection to the older one as far as I know. My local game store has started carrying it and I'm thinking of buying a copy even though my regular group isn't much into CCG's.

It looks like you were right!

...for a relatively low-action setting, Cthulhu sure does have an awful lot of Card Games attached to it...

I've been playing this regularly now with some friends.  I'm enjoying it a ton - the Scenarios are varied and creative, and their coming out frequently enough that our once-every-two-weeks schedule seems fairly reasonable.  Anybody else playing this?

Yes, me and a friend have ploughed through the scenarios from the base set and are now running through the Dunwich Legacy cycle. We just did Miskatonic Museum and Carneval of Horrors last Sunday. It's an excellent game!

Two of us are playing it by post here: http://www.callofcthulhu.org.uk/pbp/viewforum.php?f=143

We're currently playing the second scenario in the core set, having done very well in the first and off to a good start in the second so far.

We've got the Museum up next, just finished the one in the Casino.  There's three of us and we have a well balanced team - I play Zoey as a fighter/tank, then we've also got Daisy as our Clue Machine/Deck Manipulator and Skids as our Scout.  We've been remarkably successful, though we've gotten lucky and avoided most of our weaknesses.

We finished our run on Carneval by the skin of our teeth though.  That one is hard.
