The Derelict - A Free Call of Cthulhu Scenario by Sandy Petersen

Recommended Posts

PoC

As part of Free RPG Day 2016 (Saturday, 18th June), Chaosium will be offering The Derelict, a new 32 page Call of Cthulhu scenario from the pen of Sandy Petersen (and Mike Mason).

If you're fortunate enough to live near a participating store, no doubt worth picking up!

I don't live near any gaming stores, let alone participating ones. Do you think it will be available online after the fact?

I don't know if any Australian online shops participate, but some online US venues offer free RPG day stuff in conjunction with placing an order on the day of the event.

Chaosium have said it will be available as a PDF download from the beginning of July, but only to members of their organised play programme.

The problem for retailers is that these "free" programs usually aren't free. When I asked my retailer about the free scenario, he told me the package deal it was a part of was too expensive, and was full of games that there wasn't a lot of interest in.

It's the same way with Free Comic Book Day. The retailers still have pay for the comic bundles and the shipping (shipping usually being the more expensive of the two).

I guess I'll just have to wait and hope it's made available to the Cult of Chaos.

I'm looking forward to this, already expressed my interest in running it with my FLGS (who is participating).

The free pdf on the 1st July to the Cult of Chaos is a nice touch.

I don't have a FLGS willing to do Free RPG Day either, and the thing I have been wondering about is offering to pay for the stuff. You can find all of the details on their website, and it looks like a kit is $95. The obvious downside to this is that it is obviously no longer free. The other downside? Only two copies of the Derelict are in each kit, so if you were splitting it with someone who is in to CoC, you are both out $47.50 for a free adventure. Maybe I should keep my brilliant ideas to myself...

Fortunately, the scenario WILL be available as a free download for Cult of Chaos members.  :-)

Arrived (running, no less) at Compleat Strategist in Manhattan, on of two or three stores covering the NYC area, 30 minutes after they opened, and The Derelict was gone. All stores only get 2 copies.

Such disappoint. I actually watched Ghost Ship (don't!) and Harbinger Down (myeah) in anticipation.

It's great that it'll be available to Cult of Chaos members, but I'm not a member, and I don't want to adhere to the membership rules either.

So...

I ended up spending $180 buying Achtung and Trail books instead, and then I bought The Derelict on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/FREE-RPG-DAY-2016-THE-DERELICT-CALL-OF-CTHULHU-MODULE-FRPG-SANDY-PETERSEN-NEW-/152134649927?hash=item236bee8847:g:wAUAAOSwGIRXZWFd).

Here in Quebec City, only one store participating in Free RPG day. It opened at 10h00, I was there at 10h05 and.. all the CoC modules were gone.. (only 2 copies seller told me) :(

BUT, I was able to Fast Talk/Oratory a younger gamer that had one copy of everything and he gracely gave me his copy of "The Derelict" after I told him all about my ongoing CoC group since 1990, playing once/twice a year nowadays. He refused I pay him, and even thank me for the "History lesson"! Great kid!

Now, I suppose I will not ruin anybody pleasure by revealing a small part of a very impressive handout within the module. Being a bit of an history buff (aren't we all ?), I was very pleased by seeing it: follow the link..

Cheers!, hope everyone could get a copy of this short but fun S. Petersen module somehow, someday...

I managed to snag a copy at my local game shop here in Virginia. My son and I got there 10 minutes before they opened this morning. We went in as soon as the the lights were on and scooped up one of the two copies they had.

We mention The Derelict in the June edition of the CBC.

@MikeM very kindly showed me a copy a few days back.

It's a very nice production for a Free RPG Day giveaway.

I don't know if there are distribution restrictions, but I could see it possibly making some sense in the future for Chaosium to increase the print run a little and make a few copies available afterwards as a direct purchase from their web site for people who really want a print version and don't mind paying something for it.

For those lucky enough to have a copy of the module, I have a stat question about the adventure:

I'm a bit confused about the size of the main antagonist. Cover picture and stat block (size=210!!) points to a humongous creature, but the adventure itself seems to show a somewhat more "slightly bigger than man-size" creature..? Thoughts?

Thanks!

I was fortunate to get the last copy at a store I visited while on vacation. We arrived minutes after it opened. The store limited everyone to two items per person, which seems a reasonable approach.

Both copies were gone by the time I stopped at my store. :/

Artistic License.

Plus from the Norse mythology that Sandy uses, I would think that slightly bigger than man-size is appropriate to run in this adventure. If I had a copy of 7th Edition, I might be able to throw more light on this query.

I got my copy from my games shop, yesterday. They only had 3 copies in total.

I got a copy and ran it at Lvl Up in Bournemouth yesterday. Fun scenario. As for the issue crazykane has I didn't see a problem as the cover does give an impression but like other recent Chaosium scenario products should have a spoiler alert or a paper cover like those magazines on the top shelf.

I noticed a couple of problems./errors:

p15 LH column first para of Level four text mentions level three when it should be level four.

The handwritten note in the chief engineers cabin should really be in Norwegian not English

Remember, in 7e Humans range from about 30-90 in size, so the 210 size of the creature is probably more than double Human size. The image on the cover implies it would be size 210 based on the old scale of 3-18.

I ran the scenario for 2 players yesterday at my game store (the 10am start time might have been too early). The players perhaps had too much firepower for a small boat (two shotguns) but that still saw two NPCs and one PC dead before the end of the adventure. It is a pretty good introductory adventure, and my only problem is that it was sometimes difficult to find specific material since the maps are very specific on rooms, but the writing in the book is less specific and a lot more is left up to the GM (Keeper). It's not a bad adventure though and the two players enjoyed themselves.

I stopped by another game store doing Free RPG Day and they had a full table of 6 players.

If the store in northern Virginia where I stopped had any copies, they were gone by the time I got there. Disappointed, obviously.

I did pick up a few other freebies. The one for Lamentations Of The Flame Princess made me not want to play that game. A bestiary of slugs for a D&D-like game might be mildly interesting. One that starts with a strained, Dada-like manifesto in which the author calls out one of the designers of the FATE system for unknown crimes against the hobby? Curious, maybe, but I could care less about squabbles among insiders. One that includes the slug equivalent of tentacle porn? Ew, no thanks. And where are the "adult content" warnings one might expect on the cover?

There were only two copies of The Derelict in each pack so getting a copy was probably quite hard. However Chaosium have said it will be available POD from Lulu for 2.99 plus shipping soon. Cult of Chaos keepers get a free pdf d/l on 1st July as well.

My Lulu printed copy arrived today.  The character sheets in the back were offset by a page as if the pagination was screwed up. This puts two characters information is on one page. Not sure if that was the Lulu or the adventure was printed that way.
