"Something unknown, engineers say – and all the more intriguing to many residents for being unknown – has blocked the progress of the biggest-diameter tunnel-boring machine in use on the planet, a high-tech, largely automated wonder called Bertha. At five stories high with a crew of 20, the cigar-shaped behemoth was grinding away underground on a three-kilometre-long, $US3.1 billion ($3.5 billion) highway tunnel under the city’s waterfront on December 6 when it encountered something in its path that managers still simply refer to as “the objectâ€.

Lamentably, it has since been solved, and it turns out to be a very long pipe put there two years ago by the department of transportation.  Yes, the same DOT that is currently hitting the pipe with their massive tunnel boring machine.

 

But perhaps that's just the official explanation.

I can understand if it was a small guy with a pickaxe hitting something like a pipe but with the size of this thing plus the people running it (and the experts they called in) couldn't identify a simple pipe? While I wouldn't mind living in seattle, if people running things can't figure out a pipe underground, I feel sad for all those having to listen to orders from these so-called experts/people in charge.
