WESTWOOD, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Two men picked the wrong house to try to rob Wednesday night. Armed with baseball bats and a toy gun, the two were no match for a man who got medieval while defending his home. Grant Lambert normally uses his machete for yard work, but Wednesday night at his home in Westwood, he proved it can be an effective makeshift weapon too.

WINNIPEG - A Winnipeg teen who attacked a city worker with a samurai sword after one of the man’s co-workers made fun of his skin condition has been sentenced to six months custody and community supervision plus 18 months supervised probation.

Judge Sid Lerner credited the now 17-year-old boy three months for time already served.

Lerner said the attack was not committed impulsively in haste, noting the boy ran home to retrieve the sword.

“This was a particularly egregious instance of assault with a weapon,” said Lerner, who ordered the incident be designated a serious violent offence.

Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, a young offender guilty of three serious violent offences can face being sentenced as an adult and a lengthy term of “rehabilitative custody.”

This past June the boy, who was 16 at the time, was walking home when he passed a city concrete crew and heard some of them joke and taunt him about his skin condition. The boy suffers from vitiligo, a skin condition that results in a loss of pigmentation, the same skin condition claimed by pop star Michael Jackson.

Enraged, the boy ran home, grabbed an ornamental samurai sword and returned.

The workers scattered when they saw the boy running at them with the sword. A worker who had nothing to do with the initial exchange tripped and fell. The boy struck him on the head with the sword, opening up a 10-cm gash that required 15 staples and stitches to close.

A psychiatric report said the boy suffers “significant intellectual delays ... (and) is likely to act on the first solution that came to mind, without a full consideration of the consequences of his actions.”

Defence lawyer Katherine Dowle argued at a previous hearing the sword was ornamental and had a blunt edge. Lerner said that did not diminish the seriousness of the attack on an “unarmed defenceless individual who had fallen and was unable to escape.”

"In a bedroom was her son ... with a 3-foot sword," Kelly said.

I know this is a major callback, but when the katana topic reopened, I wanted to share some more details on this case. My wife was actually counsel for Sonny Thomas in his civil suit against the Bethlehem Police. So, I read a lot of testimony and helped with a trial simulation based on the case.

What is missing from the OP on this account are two very Lovecraftian facts.

1. Not only did Sonny Thomas stab and virtually behead the victim, he proceeded to "annoint the body with oil" and set the corpse aflame as a "sacrifice". Also found burning on the body there were bits of paper on which Sonny had written quotes from scripture.

2. When asked why Sonny did it, he responded that "the voices" told him that if he did not make the sacrifice, Sonny's son was going to get hurt. In Sonny's own words he had to "stop the evil".

After the trial, as a spoof, I designed a Free Sonny Thomas t-shirt with Stop the Evil on the back. His victim was a known crack dealer, so I was not real worried about sensitivity.

Wyo. man gets probation for samurai sword robbery

A Cheyenne man who plead guilty to robbing a convenience store with a samurai sword in January was sentenced to probation.

A Laramie County judge sentenced 21-year-old Jeremy P. Stinger to four years of supervised probation Thursday. Stinger pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon Sept. 30.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports that Stinger entered the store and demanded money after pulling the sword from his long coat. Police say the clerk gave Stinger money from the register and Stinger left.

Police say the clerk at the Cheyenne Kum-N-Go and a customer tackled Stinger outside the store and held him until officers arrived.

Now back to samurai swords. No deaths; this time. No crime committed with the sword.

A man accused of 12 recent armed robberies in the Columbia area was captured thanks to the efforts of a convenience store clerk who chased and beat the suspect with a samurai sword, law officials said today.

The bleeding suspect, identified as Brad Grayland Vinson, 52, was just one of some 25 individuals or small groups who are responsible for most of a recent crime wave of local break-ins, burglaries and armed robberies from Shandon to Blythewood, said Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott and interim Columbia police chief Randy Scott.
