Yes indeed, nothing says hearth, home, and kinsmen to me like bloody mayhem with a sword or, indeed, any melee weapon. Oh Lord...

Indeed...

William Allen was on the phone with his ex-wife Sunday night and his live-in girlfriend apparently didn't like it, and soon he was getting jabbed with a ninja sword, according to Pasco sheriff's office report.

Hours earlier, someone had broken into John Pontolillo's house and taken two laptops and a video-game console. Now it was past midnight, and he heard noises coming from the garage out back.

The Johns Hopkins University undergraduate didn't run. He didn't call the police. He grabbed his samurai sword.

As soon as people realize these things are dangerous.

Baltimore homicide detectives don't believe a Johns Hopkins University student had "the intent to kill" when he used a samurai sword to confront an intruder outside his home, a police spokesman said Thursday.

...

Pontolillo (student) was backed up against the exterior of a garage door. Guglielmi said that Rice(victim) moved aggressively toward Pontolillo with his arms raised. Guglielmi said Pontolillo swung the sword in one downward stroke toward Rice, hitting him in the upper body and the hand. Rice's left hand was nearly severed, and he bled to death at the scene.

Identification information added.

Police doubt Hopkins student intended to use sword to kill, Baltimore Sun, 18 September 2009.

And this sort of thing has been going on for longer than this thread has been around.

Soda Can :?:

BRYAN, Texas (AP) - A man who was apparently was upset after finding a soda can in his room allegedly used a sword to cut two of his roommates. Michael Angel Zamago was jailed on Friday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon related to family violence. Bail was $25,000.

I'm not sure this is a Samurai sword, but it seems to fit.

How is this any different had the student (who was defending himself in his property) been armed with a legally-licensed gun? No difference! A weapon is a weapon is a weapon. In this case, the weapon was used to defend against a burglar. Handgun, sword, kitchen knife, or baseball bat. It makes no difference. That burglar deserved what he got.

Cops: Brooklyn man attacked with samurai sword

October 4, 2009 By DANIEL EDWARD ROSEN. Special to Newsday

A Brooklyn man attacked a well-known reggae musician with a samurai sword, causing severe cuts to his face and arms, New York police said.

Police said that at 8:04 a.m. Sunday, Oscar Joseph, 37, struck friend Garfield Dixon repeatedly with a 26-inch samurai sword while in Joseph's apartment at 158 E. 91st St. in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn.

Dixon, 41, who performs under the name Major Mackerel, suffered lacerations to the left side of his body, face, and also lost part of a finger during the attack, police said.

Police said Joseph attacked Dixon, his neighbor, because he thought the musician may have made a pass at his wife.

Dixon denied making any advances to Joseph's wife.

Dixon was hospitalized for several hours at Kings County Hospital Center. He left with bandages crowning his dreadlocks and wrapped around his left hand, his wrist and elbow.

Joseph is facing charges of first-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, sources said. An investigation is ongoing.

Here we go again...

Mr. Rogers he was not.

Armed with a samurai sword adorned with swastikas and a skull, 36-year-old George Rogers attacked an Upper Darby officer who responded to his suicidal 9-1-1 call Sunday, police said.

It was not a beautiful day in Rogers' neighborhood when he called 9-1-1 about 12:30 a.m. and said he'd just doused the rowhouse apartment he shares with his mother in gasoline, according to police.

Cops answering 9-1-1 call are met by a swordsman, whom they subdue, Philadelphia Daily News, 21/10/09

Sadly, the article didn't say who won.

My money's on the Samurai sword-wielding chap.

Will this be the killer gadget of 2010?

For those of us tired of breaking our iPhones while swinging the device using the lightsaber app, Happinet offers the Samurai Air Sword. The authentically designed samurai sword handle is essentially a battery-operated version of the aforementioned app, with sound effects matching your dramatic air swipes and not-quite-deadly thrusts.

The handle offers up to 48 different sound effects and requires only two AAA batteries to power your imaginary battles. You can pick up a black, red or blue version of the sword for just 1,660 yen ($18)

Curse you! I had my credit card ready to buy two... and then find out the merchant website is Japanese-language only. Grrrr.

For $18, I can think of.... 10 people that this would be a perfect B-day present for.

How about just buying a case for your iPhone, so that when it flies out of your slippery hand and zooming across the room, it doesn't break?

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Prosecutors say a Johns Hopkins University student feared for his life when he used a samurai sword to kill an unarmed intruder and they have decided not to file any charges.

Baltimore State's Attorney Patricia C. Jessamy said Thursday that John Pontolillo will not be charged in the death of career criminal Donald D. Rice.

Jessamy says a review of the evidence and witness interviews shows Pontolillo was justified in striking Rice.

Pontolillo is a 21-year-old junior chemistry major from New Jersey. He killed Rice by creating a huge gash in his chest and nearly severing his left hand.

On the night of the slaying, two laptops and a video game system were stolen from the home Pontolillo shared with three fellow students.
