MILWAUKEE (AP) - A sword-yielding intruder entered the wrong apartment Sunday and attacked a stranger, police said. The 24-year-old suspect allegedly went to the apartment to confront an ex-friend who lives in the same building, but instead entered the victim's apartment with a Samurai-style sword with a 20-inch blade, Capt. Michael Young said.

MILTON, Ont. - A 21-year-old woman from Milton, Ont., is facing several charges after allegedly assaulting her boyfriend and an off-duty firefighter with a samurai sword.

Halton regional police say just before 9 p.m. Sunday, the woman got into a fight with her boyfriend and used his display sword to strike him in the shoulder, arm and side of his head.

After being told to leave the home by the victim's brother, the woman went to a gas station across the street and smashed windows with the sword.

Police say an off-duty firefighter was slashed across the arm by the sword when he tried to keep the woman away from gas station employees.

Richele MacDonald is charged with two counts each of assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, mischief to property and one count of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace.

She has been remanded in custody and has a bail hearing scheduled for Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in Milton.

Banning samurai swords

Thu Dec 13, 2007 10:29am EST

LONDON (Reuters) - The government said Wednesday it would ban the sale of samurai swords because the weapons had been used in a number of serious, high-profile attacks.

The Home Office said the swords would be added to the Offensive Weapons Order from April next year, meaning they could not be imported, sold or hired.

However collectors of genuine Japanese swords and those used by martial arts enthusiasts would be exempt from the ban.

"In the wrong hands, samurai swords are dangerous weapons," Home Office Minister Vernon Coaker said.

"We recognize it is the cheap, easily available samurai swords which are being used in crime and not the genuine more expensive samurai swords which are of interest to collectors and martial arts enthusiasts."

The Association of Chief Police Officers said the swords were not a common weapon but they had been used in a number of significant incidents.

In 2000, Robert Ashman murdered a Liberal Democrat councilor at the offices of Cheltenham MP Nigel Jones, who was also seriously hurt in the attack.

A year earlier, Eden Strang seriously wounded 11 people when he went on the rampage with a samurai sword at a Roman Catholic Church near his home in Thornton Heath, south London.

Apparently the pen is mightier than the sword, at least initially...then its swords, knives, nunchuks, bows and arrows...

Would-Be NJ Ninja Drug Warriors Arrested

In New York, there's the Staten Island Ninja Burglar, who stealthily entered homes to steal money and other valuables. In NJ, there's the would-be Shinobi ninja warriors who were trying to rid the streets of drugs, by way of threatening letters.

Clifton, NJ police apprehended 20-year-old Tadeusz Pertkiewicz and 19-year-old Jesse Trojaniak early Wednesday morning. They were wearing "black SWAT-type vests and carried knives, throwing stars, swords, nunchucks and a bow and arrows." Apparently they were worried that an ex-girlfriend and other friends were, per the Star-Ledger, "descending into drug use," so they decided to start their two-man crew to stop it all.

The letters read, "Shinobi will stop your cruel and sadistic intentions with justified, yet merciful force" and accused drug users and dealers "committ[ing] sin of passing impurity" to others. Oh, and they brought along homemade smoke bombs, perhaps to throw into a drug dealer's house. However, police spotted them leaving a letter and arrested them before that could happen.

Petrkiewicz said he did not intend to harass his ex--his issue was that she was letting people smoke pot in her house. However, the police said, "Their intentions may have been good. But we tell everyone that they shouldn't take the law into their own hands because it will cause more problems for everyone in the long run."

Guard fatally shoots man with swords at Scientology building

By James Wagner and Harriet Ryan, Los Angeles Times, November 23, 2008

A security guard at the Church of Scientology's Celebrity Centre in Hollywood today shot and killed a man wielding two samurai swords, police said.

Police detained the guard for questioning but said a surveillance tape at the facility backed his claim that he fired his gun to protect himself and two colleagues.

"The evidence is very clear the security officers were defending their safety," said Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Terry S. Hara.

Authorities did not release the name of the guard or man killed in the 1:30 p.m. shooting. The tape showed the man arriving at the Celebrity Centre's Bronson Avenue parking lot in a red convertible, getting out of the vehicle and approaching a trio of security guards while waving a sword in each hand, Hara said.

He said the man, who was described as being in his 40s, was "close enough to hurt them" when the guard fired. The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the guard worked for a private security company. Detectives cordoned off the Franklin Avenue complex with yellow tape as investigators combed through the dead man's vehicle. The incident occurred at one of Hollywood's most distinctive landmarks. Originally a luxury hotel, the eight-story building was built in the style of a 17th century French castle with a striking white facade and turrets that loom over the nearby Hollywood Freeway.

The church transformed the building into a facility aimed at celebrities 39 years ago. According to a church website, the Celebrity Centre caters to "artists, politicians, leaders of industry, sports figures and anyone with the power and vision to create a better world." The complex includes a restaurant, theater and hotel.

Representatives for the church did not immediately return calls.

"I have no information," said a woman who answered the phone at the Celebrity Centre.

The facility is ringed by a fence, and security cameras dot the property's perimeter. Guards on bikes also patrol the area.

"That is one thing about living here, you get free security," said Brant Hoibin, 34, who lives in an apartment adjacent to the Celebrity Centre.

Not strictly a samurai sword, but then at the offenders age I don't think he could lift one:

PEMBROKE PINES - Children at the school where police said a knife-wielding 7-year-old boy robbed a classmate are receiving a special lesson from teachers today: how to act in civil society.

Two days after a parent reported her 6-year-old was held up at knifepoint for $1 in the school bathroom...

It makes me wonder why English criminals don't turn to one of the many fine varieties of native British swords.

The fight was reported about 1 a.m. today. Rondeau and Adolf Stegbauer, 69, both of Indianapolis, were “actively involved in a sword fight,†IMPD spokesman Sgt. Matt Mount said in a statement. One man used what police described as a World War II Japanese officer’s sword and another had a thin blade sword, although investigators were not immediately certain which weapon was used by which man.

I suspect that this topic is the world's finest clearinghouse for stories about sword attacks, katanas or otherwise. Perhaps we should spin it off into its own wiki page- "The Cutting Edge- Sword Attacks in the Modern Era".

Woman Dies After Swordfight Between Men

Police: Woman Stepped Between Men During Fight

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA --

A woman died after a swordfight involving her brother-in-law and her grandson at a home on Indianapolis' far-northwest side early Thursday morning.

Indianapolis police Sgt. Matt Mount said Adolf Stegbauer, 69, and Chris Rondeau, 39, were involved in an argument at a home in the 5200 block of Raceway Road at about 1 a.m.

One of the men grabbed a sword as the dispute escalated, prompting the other man to also brandish a sword.

Franziska Stegbauer, 77, stepped between the men and was stabbed. She later died at Wishard Memorial Hospital.

The two men were also taken to Wishard suffering from stab wounds.

It was not immediately known if the woman's death was a result of stab wounds or a possible heart attack, police said.

Investigators are trying to determine who started the fight and which man stabbed the other first.

More 'fun & games' with Samurai Swords in NZ

Police have arrested a 16-year-old after a samurai sword attack nearly severed a man's hand outside a Palmerston North party.

The youth, from Bunnythorpe, near Feilding, was arrested yesterday and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He would appear at a special sitting of Palmerston North District Court this morning, said Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan.

"The samurai sword used in the attack has been recovered from a local address. It is approximately one metre in length," Mr Sheridan said.

and the punchline is:

The victim of a samurai sword attack which severed his hand over the weekend was today arrested for possession of an offensive weapon.

Police said Matt Durham was charged over an altercation which preceded the sword attack in which he allegedly wielded a crowbar.

Durham said on Wednesday he was attacked outside his Linton Street flat in Palmerston North after gatecrashers arrived at a party.

"(One) just ran at me with the sword. I put my hand up to defend myself.

Yes indeed, nothing says hearth, home, and kinsmen to me like bloody mayhem with a sword or, indeed, any melee weapon. Oh Lord...
