Dealing with Spam

Recommended Posts

PoC

We do our best to deal with spam on the site but sometimes it still gets though.

If you see something you suspect to be spam please do feel free to report it by using the "Report" link. Posting "Spam reported" immediately after the spam post also helps others know that it's already been reported.

Since we've had higher than usual spam attempts recently (even though we have quite strong countermeasures in place) we've now added an additional procedure that puts new account registrations into a review queue before being made fully active. Apologies for introducing this additional hurdle, we hope it's temporary. The account review process shouldn't take long.

It's an extra admin task for us and an extra delay for new members but it's something forced on us by spammers.

Thanks for understanding.

Further to reviewing new account registrations.

We can only really go off what details are entered in the "Interests" section of your new account profile. If these details are rather vague and we have no other information to go off then we may end up deleting the account.

We have had to learn to aggressively review new account registrations as spammers become cleverer and more insidious (both bots & humans), so please help us to help you by providing suitable details in the "Interests" field of your new account!

Thank you.

Over at PLAY@YSDC we've had issues with spam as well. Likewise we have revamped the new user account procedures. I guess this is the reason why the function to post messages to users in the profile view is gone, here at Yoggie. Good to see you are on top of things.

Good luck on the spam-hunting.

/Dave

Yes, I'm afraid it turned out to be a spammer honeypot.

A further update.

  • Newly registered users with less than 3 posts cannot post blogs, links, attach signatures or view/create member profiles.

Accounts with less than three posts posts are generally designated as "New Members" and after that, simply "Members".

ACCOUNT APPROVAL

A quick reminder to say that if you've signed up for a new account on Yoggie and wonder why you're unable to download files or make a post, it may be because your account still needs staff approval before becoming fully active. This is a manual process (as it has been for the past several thousand accounts) and was introduced to help prevent the increasing tides of spam that try to reach these shores.

You should see a large banner across the site explaining that your account is awaiting approval.

You patience in this step is much appreciated.  We try to approve accounts as soon as possible but please be aware that even admins may be AFK (and may not live in your time zone).

It's an inconvenience for everyone but it's one of the prices we pay for not being deluged.

Thank you.

We've been fairly good at giving "benefit of the doubt" to some member applications, but recently that has come back to bite us, as these have turned out to be spammers. So I'm sorry to say we're going to have to be more keen-eyed in the future when reviewing member applications because of recent spammer behaviour. :-(

When signing up to the site please do pay particular attention to the "Interests" section and the specific guidance given there. We've learnt that short/generic/non-compliant answers are a red flag.

Spammers are a terrible, creating more work and make everything more difficult for everyone.

Thanks again for your understanding, it's unfortunate but very necessary I'm afraid.

I'm sorry to say we still get the occasional spam post getting through. The reason turns out to be because on occasion we've been giving "benefit of the doubt" to some registrations (with respect to correctly filling in the Interests field). As a result, going forward I'm afraid we'll have to be more strict in review (i.e. apply its guidelines properly). :-( Sorry about this, but spammers are a bane for everyone.

In somewhat better news, if you're just after some of the downloads in our Files section, you no longer need to register (or be logged in) to download them!

Due to a recent flurry of contact form spam, the "Contact us" page has been temporarily suspended. Admins can still be reached via the Private Messaging system of course.

With June's site update we re-enabled the "Contact us" page for public use.

We had a good month or so before the spammers found it again.

As a result the "Contact us" page has now been switched from a free-for-all to site member use. Apologies, it is an inconvenience, but we react to the situation at hand. Meanwhile Private Messages and Support Tickets work as always.
