[Japan] The Nukekubi

Recommended Posts

I am looking for the mythic Japanese monster, nukekubi, in a Call of Cthulhu supplement. None of my current library has the creature. Is anyone aware of a supplement that has them?

It's not in Malleus Monstorum and I do not know any supplement that features it. The only time I have seen it was in a Hellboy comic.

The stats might be in BRP Japan. I'll try to remember to have a look.

You may be able to use this as a basis. The Rokuro-kubi is very similar.

Rokuro-kubi

Supernatural creatures, rokuro-kubi have the daytime

semblance of humans but, at night, their heads, gullets,

stomachs and intestines separate from the body, attach

themselves together and the ghastly assemblage goes in

search of live fl esh, preferring human whenever it can get it.

The head and guts must rejoin with the body by daybreak or

the creatures whither and die as the fi rst rays of the morning

sun strike them. Their inert bodies are therefore always wellhidden

and protected before the heads go hunting.

In human form the neck can extend rapidly up to a

length of three metres allowing the monster to bite at

range. They are also practitioners of sorcery and are

known to serve and ally with human sorcerers in return

for protection and hunting rights. A rokuro-kubi has a

chance equal to its POW of knowing 1D4 sorcery spells

at a base score of INT+POW. If it serves a human

sorcerer, double this chance.

Rokuro-kubi are therefore cunning, malicious and

merciless killers. Like the bakemono they abhor the kami

and are fond of shrine desecration. In human form, the

head must be severed for the rokuro-kubi to be completely

killed. They can slowly regenerate Hit Points, taking a

number of hours equal to the total damage sustained to

fully recover but recover they can. In the fl oating head

state, the monsters can be killed either by being kept from

the body at sunrise or being sliced into ribbons; the body

is required to recover from damage.

I don't know off-hand if they're any different, but Rokuro-kubi stats are also in Secrets of Japan for CoC proper.

There's always been a good deal of Rokuro-/Nuke-kubi confusion, although I'm not sure if this confusion started with Hearn's Kwaidan or dates back earlier (IIRC, the tale "Rokuro-kubi" is actually about Nuke-kubi).

There's penanggallan stats in the upcoming Cthulhu by Arclight. However, you could just give the head statistics of a particularly beefy bat (with a better bite attack); the body doesn't really do anything anyway.
