The creepiest music...

Recommended Posts

Besides my usual recommendation of early Tangerine Dream, I just heard about a band/collective called United Bible Studies about a half hour ago. Apparently before a show in Providence, they did a "music ritual" at HPL's grave site and recorded it. Despite the potential for extreme wankery, I found the music pretty compelling. You can listen here:

Having watched The Mist, the last track in the film stuck in my head; can't help feeling it might be good for an "it's all gone very wrong" end-of-the-world barriers-of-reality-collapsing moment: The Host of Seraphim by Dead can Dance.

And with a more modern feel, Gyroscope by Boards of Canada is pretty unsettling - with the sounds of a creepy kid counting over and over

that made an appearance in the film Sinister.

As others have said, the Silent Hill soundtracks contain a lot of unsettling ambient ... unpleasantness ... and AKLO's music is worth sampling: http://aklo-lovecraftian.bandcamp.com

And now, I'm off to pay a visit to Allicorn's bandcamp page :)

Any spotify users here? A collaborative playlist for different style of background music (suspense, action, ambient etc) could be ace..

Here's some of my ambient stuff, which was created to have a certain amount of creepiness: https://soundcloud.com/chasedbybuildings - The first two pieces have a slower pace whilst the rest pick up the pace a bit, in their own way (especially the last two tracks). Mne Strashno uses a sample from the so-called Lost Cosmonaut recordings.

I love Chased by Buildings! Unfortunately, I can't see any way of buying their stuff. Is there any website they sell their albums?

Well, Chased By Buildings is me :) Thus far I haven't done enough stuff to patch together into an album ;) All that exists for the time being is what's on Soundcloud.

The Silence of the Lambs soundtrack is wonderful creepy and tension building.

Wow!! Pretty impressive I must say. i can't add them to my playlist in iTunes, but I'm definitely looking forward to the release of your first album!

Way to go!

Thanks! They're all created quite simply, using only a fretless bass, a Line 6 UX1, Audacity and bits and bobs of sampling. I don't have any plans to do new stuff right now (no time) and I'm not sure if I'd ever get the chance to do an album.

Is there any chance we can download/buy those first 3 tracks?

Um... er... not at the moment, no. Sorry. At the moment it's still just a bit of non-commercial noodling on my behalf ;)

Maybe I missed it but I didn't see one of my favorites for ambient music: Nox Arcana. Similar to Midnight Syndicate (actually a split from them).

Especially their tribute to Cthulhu:

For 20s music, the two soundtracks from Boardwalk Empire, are pretty good- pure 20s jazz/music. Anything by Vince Giordano would be excellent!

Definitely worth checking ! I just regret not having jumped on the wagon when Tattered was still available in CD form (I've a definite preference for the physical form but wasn't yet paypal-enabled when it was available and when I came back it was gone and only available as download).

Also of course (shameless plugs being my speciality), there's my Tatters and In Remote Places albums. Not in the same style, but the little PR demon on my shoulder would bit me if I didn't drop a link, so hey.

Also some Christopher Young scores may be of interest (be they from his early style -Hellraiser, The Fly- or mode modern -Sinister- )
