CoC to ToC Conversions

Recommended Posts

PelgranePress

We are looking for people to write free downloadable conversion notes for Chaosium's great adventures. They'd be written in such a way that the original would be required to play the game. Chaosium are happy to let us do this.

You would need to be familiar with both CoC and ToC and have played an enjoyed both systems.

Payment would be in product. You are interested, please list the supplements you'd be willing to convert (you could do as many or as few as you liked), and email me simon@dyingearth.com off-list.

Edit:

Completed conversions and a Word template can be found here. Now updated.

Completed: * Conversion Template 1.1 with sample styles and a font, created by Arseny Kuznetsov with additions by Ben Phillips

* Beyond the Mountains of Madness from Chaosium, converted by Arseny Kuznetsov, David Bruce Cousins and Belinda Kelly.

* The Reeling Midnight from Miskatonic River Press, converted by Christopher Smith

Are you looking for conversion notes just for an adventure or for whole books? Ex: "The Case" or all of Curse of Cthulhu?

As much CoC stuff as possible!

But, we don't have a proper format for doing this yet, so we'll start small and work upwards.

Why not just create a conversion system and wash your hands?

They did, more or less, towards the back of the Trail of Cthulhu core book. This allows for the conversion of stats and such, but not so much of key plot points. See the The Haunting for Trail of Cthulhu thread for an example of what I believe Simon is seeking.

Because conversion is an effort, and I see no need for duplication of that effort. Plus, it would be fun to dust off some old CoC adventures and give them a run-through!

Well, it is a sample of what Pelgrane is looking for. Just not a very good one. It has a few problems that need tweaking -- no core clues and the bad guy needs redesigning.

I did a better job on my conversion of Terror.

I sent you an email regarding some adventures I'd be interested in converting. I have a couple of questions though, although the conversion would of course need to require the original supplement to play are we allowed to change or add anything? To really be Gumshoe adventures, they're going to need some suggestions for extra information gained through point-spending and perhaps some minor restructuring of clues.

In addition I'm wondering if you wish to convert the Dreamlands supplements since they play somewhat differently and aren't much mentioned in ToC aside from the box on page 84.

Are you still going through with this project? I sent an email but never heard anything back.

I haven't received anything from your email address, but we'd certainly like your help. PM me with the adventure(s) you'd like to convert.

We've now got an updated version of The Haunted House, plus a Word document template you can use (if you wish) to perform the conversion.

I think this an excellent idea. I just purchased "Mansions of Madness" that I am planning to run using ToC... Haven't had a chance to read through but I will try using the conversion notes and document to prepare.

I don't think I am experienced enough woth CoC or ToC to do much of a job but the conversion example and format will give me somewhere to start.

The bottom of page 3 of "Horror of the Glen" is the same as in my conversion of Haunted House, and among other things gives me the credit for writing it (which is not exactly true).

I think the text should read something like this:

All products and trademarks mentioned here are the property of their respective owners. Trail of Cthulhu is ©2008

Pelgrane Press Ltd. Call of Cthulhu is © Chaosium, Inc. Green and Pleasant Land is © Games Workshop. The Horror of the Glen is written by [insert author's name here]. This conversion is written by Ken Hickman (I presume that "Kev" in the text is a misprint).

And maybe it's worth inserting a empty line before each heading? That would make the text easier to read.

If you need any help with formatting the document, I'll be glad to help. :)

Did anyone do a conversion for Masks of Nylarthotep? I'm going to start using Trail for my current campaign. We've already gone through the New York chapter, so I'll be starting at the London section.

No, they didn't, and that would be great.

Available now is Beyond the Mountains of Madness from Chaosium, converted by Arseny Kuznetsov, David Bruce Cousins and Belinda Kelly. This was the biggest effort to date, at over 38 pages, and was written by Keepers experienced in both systems.

Wow. Kudos to Arseny Kuznetsov. I really didn't know if Trail would be right for this campaign. Doubts: assuaged.

Thanks. :)

There should be some extra materials with the conversion, I’ve just sent them to Simon and hope he uploads it soon.

Currently we’re looking for feedback (or even a playtest) on the conversion, to see how the new rules work, so it would be nice to hear what you think.
