Summary

"Welcome to the End of the World": A Seattle history professor encounters deadly cultists when he returns to his hometown to settle his late mother's estate. Cthulhu is a 2007 American horror film loosely based on the novella The Shadow Over Innsmouth (1936) by H. P. Lovecraft. The film moves the story from New England to the Pacific Northwest, and is notable for having a gay protagonist: Screenwriters explained that they chose to exploit the metaphor for the horror faced by a gay person returning for a relative's funeral and having to face the horrors of small-town life.

Ratings

MPAA Ratings

  • Rated: R (Profanity, Nudity, Adult Content, Sexual Situations, Violence)

Tentacle Ratings

A rough measure of how "Lovecraftian" the work is:

  •  ????? (Needs a review! I've never seen this; it seems to be one or more Tentacles, as a loose adaptation of "The Shadow Over Innsmouth"?)

Note: This rating is not intended as a measure of quality, merely of how closely related to Lovecraftian "Weird" fiction the work is.

  • Horrornews.net, (link) - "Cthulhu never really becomes much more than an effort without backbone. My recommendation is to pass on this one except if you are a Lovecraft fan who can ride along with your background know-how of the story to tie in all the loose ends."
  • S.T. Joshi: "Fabulous! The essence of Lovecraft... maybe the best Lovecraft adaptation to date...."
