"Whispers" is a segment from the anthology film: Necronomicon: Book of the Dead (1993 film)

Summary

"Whispers" is a rough pastiche of "The Horror at Red Hook (fiction)" and "The Whisperer in Darkness (fiction)". During a pursuit of a suspect known as "the Butcher", two police officers, Paul and Sarah of the Philadelphia Police Department, are arguing over their failed relationship and the coming baby. The argument leads to a crash, flipping the cruiser upside down. Paul, having unbuckled his seat belt in the argument, is knocked out and dragged off by an unseen person. Sarah unbuckles herself, breaks the window and exits the vehicle. Unable to call for backup, she follows a blood trail alone into a creepy warehouse with sub-basements extending deep below the city, into a confrontation with a gruesome alien horror.

MPAA Ratings

  • Rated: R (Adult Content, Sex and Nudity, Violence)

Tentacle Ratings

A rough measure of how "Lovecraftian" the work is:

  • SSs__ (Two and a Half Tentacles: Lovecraftian)

The anthology's component stories vary in how faithfully they are adapted from Lovecraft's work from recognizable adaptations, to misguided pastiches. In this case, it's a rough pastiche of "The Horror at Red Hook (fiction)" and "The Whisperer in Darkness (fiction)" with a plot like a fever-dream.

Note: This rating is not intended as a measure of quality, merely of how closely related to Lovecraftian "Weird" fiction the work is.

  • Y.Whateley: Some interesting ideas get lost in the feverish plot, but this gruesome, blood-soaked story is in some ways perhaps the most Lovecraftian segment in its anthology in spirit, if not the most faithful or coherent.
