The Great Depression begins: Black Thursday and then Black Tuesday (October 29) - Was the most devastating stock market crash in the history of the United States, and signaled the beginning of a 10-year Great Depression that affected all Western industrialized countries.

The Mount Hope Bridge, a two-lane suspension bridge spanning the Mount Hope Bay in eastern Rhode Island, at one of the narrowest gaps in Narragansett Bay is officially opened by state senator, William Henry Vanderbilt III.
