Clarification: Penalty dice for Auto-Fire?

My SMG skill is 80%. I can fire 8 rounds in a volley. If I split the damage of the volley among 4 opponents all within my normal range, I have to make an additional roll every time I switch targets. Do these additional rolls incur penalty dice? Or do penalty dice accrue only when I fire multiple volleys?

In addition:

This costs me 11 rounds

Each opponent is hit by one bullet

The way I read it, you can't do this. Instead, each target counts as a separate volley, and adds a penalty die as normal. Plus you have a 1 round/meter "wasted ammo" round.

 

So provided they're all 1m away from each other. 8 bullets at no penalty die at first target, 1 round wasted to switch target, 8 bullets at 1 penalty die for second target, a 2nd wasted round to switch target, 8 bullets at 2 penalty dice for third target, 3rd wasted round, 8 bullets at 2 penalty dice with all results bumped down by one level of success ie, regular success misses, hard success is normal hit, extreme success is hard success and doesn't impale, etc. I guess that means you can't crit with more than 2 penalty dice?
