"Call of Cthulhu is now the Pepsi of RPG franchises, alongside D&D’s Coke, and the game’s success is part of the revival of Lovecraft and Lovecraftian fiction"

— reviewer Paul StJohn Mackintosh acknowledges the influence of Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu in his new piece on The Legacy of Lovecraft.

Trying to work out if being the Pepsi of RPG franchises is an insult or not...

At least they're not calling 7th Ed the New Coke of RPG franchises. :)

It's positive for me. I prefer Pepsi to the more widely sold Coke! Just as I prefer CoC to D&D. But that may just be me ;)

Mountain Dew is probably 1st ed D&D. I just ordered 20th anniv. Vampire the Masquerade. I will take a sip and see how that tastes.

In the article, it's definitely meant as a compliment. The author, Paul StJohn Macintosh, is a big fan of Call of Cthulhu. It's similar to what James Lowder says in his book Hobby Games - the 100 Best, that CoC is "the other game that everyone has on their shelf".

Or Tab?

I once spent a while at a youth camp that only had tab in its soda machines. G*d. I kept trying it hoping it would taste better but it never did.

I think it's something pointless, like RIFTS or 4th ed. D&D...

If D&D is Coke, maybe D&D-like RPG's should be other colas.

I'd view CoC as more like 7-up ('the un-cola')... or maybe Mountains of Dewness.

I would have said that, but was worried no-one else would get it! ;)

Irn Bru for the win!

Let's just hope you have a better marketing team. ;)

Calling CoC the Pepsi of RPG franchises. while flattering, is a bit off as analogy, since Pepsi and Coca-Cola are essentially variants of the same "coke" flavor, while CoC and D&D are completely different gaming experiences.  Maybe Snapple?

Pathfinder is the Pepsi of RPG. Call of Cthulhu is the Dr. Pepper of RPGs.

I think you may be right re Pepsi. However, CoC, as a product of a New Englander author, might be best described as the "Moxie" (alias "Moxie Nerve Food") of RPGs.
