I see the redoubtable PoC has published a very charming post (? I do not use Facebook or Twitter, what do you all them?) on the birthday of H.P.L. This is my own poor and belated effort.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft
Born 20th August 1690 (1890), 194 Angell Street, Providence, in His Brittanick Majesty's Colony of Rhode Island and Providence-Plantations.
Died March 15th 1737 (1937), in Providence.

Animula, vagula, blandula
Hospes comesque corporis
Quae nunc abibis in loca
Pallidula, rigida, nudula,
Nec, ut soles, dabis iocos…
My soul, my pleasant soul and witty,
The ghest and consort of my body,
Into what place now all alone
Naked and sad wilt thou be gone?
No mirth, no wit, as heretofore,
Nor Jests wilt thou afford me more.
Trans. Herbert Vaughan, 1652

''In theory, I am an agnostic, but pending the appearance of radical evidence I must be classed, practically and provisionally, as an atheist.''
