Just tooting my own arcane flute:

See Post #34 for the Enchiridion of Elucidation.

Trail of Cthulhu Condensed Rules PDF - boils the rulebook down into just the "crunch": comprising 4 pages of character creation and 11 pages of "playing".

Cat at Pelgrane has put this up for "official" download on their website:

http://site.pelgrane...ensed_Rules.pdf

It includes updated GUMSHOE mechanics from The Esoterrorists 2nd Edition ( explained on the last paragraph on the last page of the PDF ) to bring the Trail rules up to date with current GUMSHOE.

Quite useful for ToC players even if I do say so myself.

If you spot any errors anywhere then do let me know.

I was just considering whether I'd need to do something similar, so... yoink! :D
If you can read this, I've been wasting my time.

This is great! It's like what Pelgrane did with Dying Earth.

Bumped as the Condensed Rules doc has had an update ( probably its final update as I think I've got every rule in there now ).

For the details the following has changed:

page 6 column 1,
page 10 column 3,
Page 11 - all,
page 13 - a bit,
page 14, column 3,
page 16 column 1

The only Rulebook rules now missing from the Condensed Rules PDF ( due to space and/or I deemed them too fiddly and/or distracting ) are:

1) Some extra tweaks for vehicle pursuit contest rules based on relative top speeds of the vehicles involved and/or terrain.

2) In two-person only Scuffling combat anyone using a Scuffling weapon ( brass knuckles etc. ) is meant to go last in attack order.

3) Two alternate methods of attack round ordering:

       i) 2-person aggressor/defender model ( whoever initiated the attack on the other goes first ).

ii) Simplified mass combat - if any player character in the mass combat has an attack rating greater than the best enemy attack rating then all the players attack first in table seating order, else all the enemies go first then the players reply in table seating order.

Very nice, this along with the Wives of March (at Role Playing Public Radio) audio play should help out a lot on getting more into Trail as it sounds like there's a lot of fun there. Been waiting through the holidays to see if I get Bookhounds of London (was debating that or Eternal Lies as the first ToC book to get for helping convince some friends to try it.Thanks.

Well, I didn't think I'd be updating the PDF any more but "Never say, Never."

I bought Night's Black Agents recently and realised there were some GUMSHOE rules in there that should be in ToC so...

Added to the Condensed Rules for ToC PDF now are:

Rules for fleeing combat.

Rules for damage when you are hit by a moving vehicle or in a car crash.

The Continuing Challenge GUMSHOE test mechanic.

Rules for how tests are affected by darkness.

There are also other rules in NBA but it is a far more crunchy game than ToC and I didn't want to make ToC crunch-heavy.

If you are interested in things like more detailed pursuits and more combat options then I suggest you buy yourself a copy of NBA and incorporate those options into your ToC game. I only chose to bring over those things that I thought were essential to ToC i.e. darkness, fleeing and getting smashed up by cars.

I also noticed that the rules for natural hazards ( falling, fire, etc ) and explosions are different in NBA but I chose to keep the less-crunchy ToC rules for those things - again, you may wish to crunch-up those things by buying a copy of NBA.

You can download the updated PDF at the Pelgrane Press site under the ToC resource page.

Thanks Tony for a ToC newbie I can't tell you how helpful this is :)

I was there myself once and realised someone needed to write this...

As much as I love ToC ( and the layout and artwork in the book ) the actual copy ( when it comes to the rules ) somehow obfuscates rather than lays them out clearly. It's hard to put your finger on what is wrong exactly, it just isn't clear and succinct somehow.

This is great - the condensed rules really helped when I introduced my new players to ToC recently. A request: when updating the file, could you put in something in that final section about what changed since the last version of the file? Thanks!

I'd love to see a list of changes as well.

Also two requests for the character sheets:

1. Add forms so they are fillable on the computer in Adobe Reader

2. Add some blank spaces for custom abilities that are usually found in the supplements

I'd love to see a list of changes as well.

The Version Notes section at the end sums up what is different/extra to the main ToC rulebook. Also I list things higher up this thread.

Also two requests for the character sheets:

1. Add forms so they are fillable on the computer in Adobe Reader

2. Add some blank spaces for custom abilities that are usually found in the supplements

I'll have a look if I can "do" forms.

There is no spare space on the front of the sheets, so I suggest putting other skills in the "Dedicated Pools" space.

If you are playing Bookhounds of London then I have made some sheets specifically with those extra skills which can be downloaded from the Pelgrane Press site.

Update to the Condensed Rules For Trail of Cthulhu PDF

Download them from the ToC Resource page at the Pelgrane Press web site.

Changes:

Overhauled the front and back covers - now with back cover blurb!

Replaced many instances of "player character" with "investigator" especially during character creation chapter.

Minor change to Credit Rating table descriptions on page 6.

Fixed an error in long-range firearms use rules on page 12 column 1.

Minor clarification note change in the Darkness Effects table on page 16.

Minor clarification in the Temporary Psychological Triage section on page 22 column 1.

Slightly rewrote the Version Notes section on page 24 column 3 (although no new rules are added).
