Which of the MULA monographs have identifiable different printings? Which was the last to have the taped covers, before switching over to the current look?

A few of the earliest have alternate production codes (008x rather than 03xx). See the monograph list [LINK CURRENTLY DEAD, sorry] from the ysdc wiki page.

I can say for certain that there are two version of Machine Tractor Station; the original tape bound and a slightly revised (typos fixed) glossy.

Bump my own thread in order to ask a couple more specific questions:

1. Which was the last monograph to have the taped binding? From what I've been able to research, it looks like everything through Christmas In Kingsport (#0334) except Night Of The Kachina (#0332), which came out a few months later, when they'd switched to the standard format. Is that right?

2. Of the taped binding monographs, when did they start putting the price on the cover? I think it's either Machine Tractor Station Kharkov-37 (#0310) or Cthulhu Rising (#0311). Is that right?

The last tape bound one I have is Xmas in Kingsport, though the next I have in the series in the Primal state (0344), so there is a gap in my collection.

My tape-bound MTSKh-37 has no price listed on the cover but my (0312) Ripples from Carcosa does.

Here's hoping we get the yog wiki back some day.

My research on the switchover from tape bound to regular was based on the news archives here. Anyone have a tape bound Night Of The Kachina (#0332) or Menace From The Moon (#0336)?

Interesting on the MTSKh-37 - that would seem to be the first printing. Both my Cthulhu Rising (#0311) and Ripples From Carcosa (#0312) have the prices on the covers, so that may be when they switched over. Anyone have copies without cover prices?

I was the first printing, since it was one of the author's copies sent to me when it was first published. :)

Resurrecting my thread from seven years ago (Wow!) to try to get some closure on the topic.

I've filled in a lot of material in that time, but there are a few items that I'm trying to disprove the existence of. Given that I've been searching for a decade, I'm pretty confident, but disproving a negative is difficult at best. If I thought Chaosium would have accurate records, I'd ask them. That seems like a long shot, so I'll put it to the community to try to help... If no one jumps in with any info, then I'm going to declare them non-existent and then share the full index with everyone.

Anyway, two definitions are needed:

Tape bound: The earliest monographs had black and white covers, and were loose pages held together with black tape. These were quite possibly assembled at a local copy shop.

Perfect bound: Later, the monographs switched to a glued binding (like a an average Chaosium softcover book), with black, white, and red covers (and toward the end a few color covers crept in). These were some version of Print On Demand (except Chaosium ordered them in bundles and then sold them to us).

-= TAPE BOUND =-

0301 Cthulhu Invictus (no price on cover, no contents page)
0303 The Abbey ($12 price on cover)
0305 End Time ($14 price on cover)
0307 First Book Of Things ($14 price on cover)
0311 Cthulhu Rising ($17 price on cover)
0313 Pastores ($16 price on cover)
0314 Ramblings Of A Twisted Muse ($26 price on cover)
0317 Toying With Humans ($20 price on cover)
0318 Legacies Of The Renaissance ($13 price on cover)
0325 Twilight Memoirs ($13 price on cover)
0326 Halloween Horror ($13 price on cover)

-= PERFECT BOUND =-

0306 Mysteries Of Morocco

0317 Toying With Humans

0320 Last Trial

0322 Terror

0328 Fellowship Of The Witching Hour

Again, the question is do any of these versions exist? I don't think they do. If you have any of these, please let me know! Are you a monograph author who can speak to one or more of these definitively? Even better!

Bonus section for the highly inquisitive...

Why do I even suspect that these particular versions could exist? Four categories:

1. Invictus tape bound - Someone mentioned this misprint to me, but I can't locate the original reference. It should be the same as a regular tape bound, but Chaosium forgot to include the table of contents page. Is this true or is it a false memory on my part?

2. All the other tape bounds - Chaosium sometimes fiddled with the prices as they reprinted. As best I can tell, the prices stabilized once they got to the perfect bound period. Thus, these are the only tape bound versions that I haven't seen with the final perfect bound price. Follow that okay?

3. Toying With Humans and Terror perfect bounds - Complete pdfs exist, but I have never seen printed versions.

4. The other three tape bounds - Morocco probably went straight to full publication (23105) and skipped this version. The other two I'm guessing had rights issues.

What about the later monographs first published after the switch to perfect binding? I have only found one variation, and that was a BRP monograph, not Call of Cthulhu.

I was lucky in that I had a "buy one of everything" subscription with Chaosium when the monographs started. One of everything they produced would get put in a box that was then mailed to me every few months.

Thank you, Rick!  I, too, have been keeping a list of the MULAs, and I'd wondered what #s 375 and 380 were.  "Trollslayer" became a regular BRP release (CHA 2022), but what was "Evil Waits"?

Also, any idea what CHA 2390 and 2391 were supposed to be?

Thanks for the updates, Rick. That confirms the existence of a few items!

375 Trollslayer exists as both a monograph and a regular release.

380, uh, I don't think Evil Waits exists. Rick, can you post a picture?

No details in my notes about 2390 and 2391, other than the numbers were skipped. The wiki suggests Keepers Of The Faith may have been intended for one.

Here's what I know:

2390          COC         Miskatonic University Adventures (cancelled)

2391          COC         Undying Mars (cancelled)

Undying Mars was a project Ken Hite started, but I do not know how far it got.

I don't have 380 Evil Waits on the shelf. I probably saw it in one of our catalogs as a "soon to be released". Will look around.
