TPK! TPK! (Spoilers for Edge of Darkness) ((Fixed))

Wow, Hi guys, I'm pretty new around these parts, but have been a lovecraft fan and CoC gamer for years ^_^ in fact, seeing as sadly few of my local friends have even heard of it, through the years I've been ST pretty much every time, and while its been a rough road, seeing as I have no player experience myself to go on, I've managed to had some really good games.... in fact, today was very interesting.

I've lateley been using alot alot of the premade scenarios in the 5.5 edition book. Had a great time with the haunting, and today I used one called.... "The Edge of Darkness" I think. The initial scene went great, with a some players buying totally into the dieing old mans story (crap I forget his name ;.; ) while others remaining total skeptics. The research went pretty neat, I love watching my players scribble notes on the back of their character sheets as I recount stories to them and show them handouts. However, hehe, when we got to the farm house. Wow.

I wanted to salt out the info for them in the house while subtly hinting at the noises in the cellar....newp, one guy goes right for the cellar, while not one, but TWO head straight for the attic. The one in the cellar gets clobbered by the hobo on the way down, and since they didnt examine the room, have no idea where the hell he came from. Reduced him to one HP x.x That DB got nasty. Anyway, he runs off into the night and the others dont bother stoping him or heading after.

The two on the ladder have no trouble busting open the trap door, and one eagerly peeks up.... only to have his face shredded to the bone, costing him 3 APP on an unlucky roll, and doing a good deal of damage, which increased enough to reduce him to zero from the resultng fall off the ladder, where he additionally knocked off and landed on the guy beneath him doing a fair ammount of damage. Needless to say they lay in wait for the creature... yet notice it doesnt come down (apparently they didnt realize the wards were keeping it out of the room)

Remembering what the old man told them about the key to stopping it being in the farm house, they manage to come across the notes and find out about the ritual to get rid of it. (For those who dont know, a two hour chant starting at midnight that cant be interrupted. Some people can stop and others can join in, but at least one person must be doing the chant at all times). The creature for a reason unknown to them departs.

They prepare to enact the ritual, and as they begin, the creature returns. Howling and shaking the house to its foundations, they continue, though minor san loss slowly creeps over them as they continue. Eventually (and this wasnt in the description, but I thought it would better illustrate why it was gone) it tosses a bloody piece of hobo down to further unnerve them. Eventually the acid begins to drip as well, dealing enough damage to once again return the claw victim who recently awoke, back to unconciousness.

As it progresses, the calls of a woman in need of help initially fail to phase them, but curiosity gets to one, who goes to find and help the wounded woman.... only to get a nasty bite. However, he was a big guy, and didnt hesitate in using his DB to bust its face in... but didnt notice the hobo zombie sneaking up behind him as he went back in, who also had a DB.... after being left at -1 hp, it continued in to attack the player nearest the door, but the one who had been clubbed before gallantly ran to his aid and swong with a crowbar... unfortunatley missing, to which the zombie promptly retaliated.

Because of his prior injury, and a critial hit by the zombie, deals enough damage to kill him. (as I quite graphically describe him being ripped apart to my players...)I also determine that the sight is enough to warrant a san check for the nearby player, who fails, not only losing five san at once on an unlucky roll, but that combined with other san loss within the hour was enough to leave him indefinatley insane. Thats three players incapacitated, as the Acid/Claw victim managed to come to yet again. There were five players total.

The other was lucky and smart, managing to not take any damage, and very little san loss all night... however, his assistant, the acid victim, decided that there was no point in continuing, and ran off into the night, and did so successfully, as a luck roll determined that the zombie went after the dead PC rather than any of the live ones... The one remaining player remained and chanted, and the ritual reached its final moments, causing the creature to materialize in the center of the room..... damn, if only he hadnt failed that san test.

They could have dispelled it and been done with it, with only one fatality, and one insanity, that could have been cured with time. But unfortunatley, the writhing tentacled form caused him to loose 5 san in one shot, and according to the book, insanity in this moment worked alittle differently... to him, the creature appeared as a beautiful maiden, which he ran forward to embrace.... the result was like a fish in a blender. Poor guy.

Thus, the ritual failed, and as the one surviving player ran off into the night, the creature went to work eating the incapacitated players... weeks later, the one survivor had went back to his old life... however, an odd knock at the door late at night awoke him.... he walked toward the door and opened it..... *SCREAAAAMMMMM* End game ^_^

Hehe, well, I figured since it went through enough trouble to track down the hobo, and it now had free range of movement, it would more than likeley go after him next, even though it didnt say anything like that in the book. EVen though it looked like they all died, I've thought about our next scenario being a modern one, and having it so the one survivor wasnt killed in his home, but driven insane and possibly horribly maimed. In the modern era, with his cryptic help, and what notes remain, the investigators descendants set out to complete what their grandparents couldnt, and dispell the evil! Hehe, well ^_^ Theres my story.

    ((Sory again guys))

Er, the significance of that in particular was it was the first TPK I've ever had in CoC.

Okay... Once you start feeling better please go back and edit your post. From the length I'd say you should be inserting somewhere around 5-10 line breaks.

Once you've done that I'll go back and happily read the info on your TPK.

    Thanks.

    Dude...that's brutal.

Yeah, but the 'sequal' concept I mentioned should be really fun to play Despite what happened, my players all are begging me for more o.o! and I've even got a few new people interested, some who've never even roleplayed before.

I was actually following pretty close to the book though, oddly enough. It calls for a -lot- of san checks in the final segment. Most are pretty small, but it adds up.

That sounds very much like a typical Lovecraft short story made cinematic! Everyone dies, goes mad, and so on, and the "monster" wins.

Although TPKs are never very fun, that was a fun read. Thanks for posting!

Well, it's all the fault (for failing) of the player that decided he/she had enough and ran away on their own. After all, if they would have stayed, they could have finished chanting and sent the thing away (since the only other investigator left lost 5 SAN).

What happened wtih my group when I ran this was that I had the zombies attack during the chanting -- one from each door -- and the group split off 1 person to deal with each (total of 6 in the party).

End result was 3 badly damaged characters due to zombies, 1 due to having been ripped when they went up the trap door and then fell after being hit, and one with 5 SAN lost and ran away screaming into the night! Only one investigator kept it together, while the others fended off the zombies, to complete the chanting to send the creature back to its own void!

I really played up getting to the house, long spooky road which they could not drive down (too tight/overgrown), etc. That helped set the stage.

Regardless, this is one of the two best short scenarios I've seen in CoC, and I wish authors of published scenarios would take note.

However, this scenario -- unlike about 90% of published ones!!! -- does not require the investigators to beat the big baddie at the end using strength (which usually means they HAVE to use guns, which the stupid comment in the CoC says they lose when they have to resort to them...yeah, right!) Sending the creature away via having to chant a ritual, or some other non-combative way (even though the zombies bring in combat in a secondary way -- nice!) is perfect. I'd like to see this more in scenarios.

Ok, so I went on a slight rant...!

Either way, Edge of Darkness is a great scenario.

I transplanted the house to the North Downs south of London. I can't remember the outcome in detail (I think they just managed to finish the ritual), but the first thing that one of the characters did when they got there was to look in the attic... One impale roll later, his headless body drops back down into the house and the group in true Monty Python and the Holy Grail style run away. The player with the headless character, I brought them back as the policeman investigating his death.

Ouch Sim ^_^ hehe, great. And un, wow thats a great tip too, I probably should have played up the farmhouse as being alot more creepy than I did, and I definatley will in the 'sequal'. Thats great they succeeded though
