    Does anyone remember a documentary...

...about base-jumping, in which the main protagonists jumped from a helicopter over the South American rainforests into a crater/cave type place? I am after creating a similar type place for an upcoming adventure.

I need some photos/info about caves or chasms in jungle/rainforest that are cut off from the surrounding terrain. Can anyone help?

Why does this ring a bell?
I can see why you would want this, it paints a very vivid picture of diving into inky blackness.
Man, it would be freaky if the chord, when stretched the most, didn't snap back, like something was holding on to him. How much could those chords take? Could the chopper be 'tugged' a few feet down?
He could of course come bouncing back-up after a couple of seconds, screaming and missing an arm or something. Either that, or the chord could snap back, seemingly chewed over, straight above where it attaches to the ankle(or right at the knee )

I don't have any links, just a lot of words and very little sense :P
I know however, there are lots of places like that, which also often include a pool at the base, which often leads to subterranean submerged caverns... Ni-ice... Underground, underwater, no light, VERY isloated. The math does itself.

I think I know that documentary. IIRC the jumpers were diving into natural limestone(?) cenotes?
    Cheers.

Yes - that might be it - the whole challenge was to only open their chutes once they had actually dropped below the tree canopy.

    Cenote formation

The Mayan city of Chichen Itza was built around a number of Cenotes. Major excavations started there in about 1901 when a US Consul bought the site! (direct link).

A very small photo of the dig can be found here.

Excellent resouce for me; I'm running Bendal-Dolum, which takes place just south of all this crap. This will really help me flesh out the descriptions!

I once saw a documentary about some underwater archaeologists exploring a cenote in Florida, which had been used for funerals by the local Indians for centuries (if not millenia). There were huge amounts of human bodies down there, waterlogged and in a state of extremely good preservation (as one of the archaeologists discovered when he poked his fingers inside a skull only to discover that there was still a brain within). It just made me wonder what else could still be down there...

The strange thing was that the cenote was now in use as a spa, due to its invigorating mineral waters --- so the archaeologists would surface amidst all these Florida retirees splashing around in their bathing suits. Monster bait...
