Well, suprisingly enough Sarnath is actually a real place. Its some village over in India or Tibet. I just thought that was interesting.

It's a Tale of Two Cities. The contemporary Sarnath is a Buddhist holy site. The HPL Sarnath exists in the Dreamlands.
Many pulp writers used real names in their stories. Robert E. Howard for example. Sarnath is a very good name for that city by the way. It's easy to remember and sounds mysterious.
And, you can pronounce it. Every time something like R'lyeh comes up at the gaming table we have a short, fast-paced "discussion" over the thing.
