    Make Yog-Sothoth your Cthulhu/Lovecraft Home...

I post here quite a bit, but I am usually more of a StrangeAeons e-poster...but...I am happier with the forum style of posting like Yogg Sothoth offers.

I once canvassed the SA group members and Chaosium for an actual forum...I was poo-pooed though .

Most of the SA members seem to prefer the old school email postings.

I personally don't care too much for the email list-

    Here's why-

-The sheer volume of email I get each day is oppressive and culling the Strange Aeon posts from all the penis enlargement adds can be work.

-Because Strange Aeons uses the email format many topics are deleted and thus forgotten forever...which isn't true with a forum page. You can always go back if you think of something months later.

-This site has so much more to offer than just a message board...All those who toil here deserve our support. Therefore I am going to Paypal them some scratch this next payday!!

Ia! Ia! Cthanx! Huzzah and all that!!

I quite agree. I browse the Strange Aeons archive from time to time, but would probably never subscribe for precisely the reasons you mentioned.
Have picked up some useful links and things up from there though

Sadly, I tend to think that the useful info to bandwidth ratio on the SA list has gone down hill recently, like many lists it has become more of a friendly chatroom than anything else.

Not that I don't enjoy the atmosphere there and post to the SA list just as frequently, but I've seen and taken part in more useful threads here recently.

What, you don't care for endless threads of "What horror character are you"?

I suspect folks would have more to say if there were actual new game products to discuss.

Hmmm well you may have noticed I didn't participate in that one

Actually there doesnt seem to be much in the way of new blood on the Sa list. When I originally joined it was to ask all those awkward questions I had about game mechanics, running scenarios, how to make things more scary, where the good resources were....etc, etc. There doesnt seem much of that on the SA list anymore But there do seem to be lots of threads along that line in the Yog-Sothoth.com forums

Look at it this way since I've been registered to Y-S I have posted 184 times, I'm not saying they've all been valuable posts necessarily, but the general nature of the topics has made me more inclined to contribute. I reckon my posts to Y-S forums exceed my posts to the SA list by a significant margin and in a fraction of the time.

But both are supposed to fill the same function aren't they?

My personal take on it is ...

    1) one of ... personality. I think that with a message board, you get a greater sense of who's who??? And when you reply to a post you feel that you are actually responding to an individual -- even though, of course, you are are posting just as publicly, more so in fact, than if you'd used email to a list such as SA.

    2) I concur with Fallingtower's view. Certainly mailing lists have their place; and as a bonus email 'comes to you', whereas you have to physicaly go visit an online forum. However a threaded forum makes it easier to follow what has already been said and to contribute accordingly.

    3) Finally, and best of all ... this forum has some fantastic people signed up to it! Never have I known a message board less in need of moderating than this one!!!

Your third point is something that can be said about almost everything in the Cthulhu community. I have my own (although small) site and I have yet to do any moderation work (not even in our War in Irak thread ). The same thing counts for the official Dark Corners of the Earth boards, where I'm a moderator. I've only had to moderate once or twice there.

    Good community this is.

    Totally Nyarly!!

    Dark Corners you say!!!
I heard that the game is going to be awesome (#3 at G3).

Have you gotten to play or see it?

I am upgrading my (crappy) computer just for this baby.

Well, it looks great, but to play it we'll have to wait until it materialises in the stores next year. Until then, we'll just have to drool at the screenshots or the movies...

The DG group is much maligned, as a member myself my patented DG flame retardent suit has hardly any scorch marks on it.

Well I do admire you for your suit. Personally I can't be bothered with a group where you need to have passed a health and safety test in order to participate, and life insurance is invalid. There are so many nicer places to be. But best on you for sticking with them.

It will a chilly day in Hell should I return there.

I don't know if this is what you mean - but I can't even read your postings on Strange Aeons. I use an old school text only email reader, and all your posts come out as these MIME/html attachments. Most mails that send HTML also have a text-only version prepended, for that reason, but yours don't.

I agree that's one of the nicest advantages of the web forum. When I get bored I sometimes go back and re-browse old topics that were last posted to before I joined. Sometimes I re-activate them.

Funny, I just did that, because I realized that I was getting more out of this forum than I have out of any number of the quite expensive supplements that I routinely purchase. So I decided to vote with my wallet, for the continuation of this forum!

    (Good work, Paul!)
