Mexico, you've got Aztecs and Mayans that discovered things and sealed them to protect the world and now beacause those sites are falling to ruin after their cultures were decimated by the Europeans, the Europeans must now repair the damage they have done.

Mexico has been touched on with Mysteries of Mesoamerica, at least the Yucatan, if that's what you mean.

If you mean any country not really covered in major publications? Wow. Parts of sub-Saharan Africa, like the Congo, Saudi Arabia, some of the former Soviet states like Uzbekistan, the Caucasus, Hawaii, Tahiti, Korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Poland, Finland?

Norway. Civilised in Oslo, Trondheim, Stavanger, etc... but desolation and remoteness only a few short miles away.

New Zealand or the Polynesian islands. Maybe Tonga?

    Good for Deep one games.

So do you have any ideas yet, or are you planning to research the country and look for inspiration? And also, is this to play with your group or for publication?

I'd say play to your strengths. Setting a scenario (or book, or film) somewhere you don't know much about can easily end up unconvincing or very two-dimensional. I'm not saying stick to your home country, but I think you'll find things easier if you follow an existing interest. Apart from anything else it might make research less of a slog.

Obviously if it's just for your group then there's a lot more leeway in terms of how much detail you want, how lifelike it should be and how much people worry about accuracy. If you're looking to publish it, then picking a country you're already interested in or know about will be a big help in terms of understanding and research, especially as there's going to be more people looking critically at your work, and they won't know you. Of course, the importance of the country in the scenario will depend on what's going on, and in some cases it might be more a background flavour than an important element.

How about any of the northern countries (ie russia, norway, canada) there's tons of potential for adventure in the frozen tundra regions. Some lost city buried beneath the permafrost or a tribe of cultists forgotten by time. Endless.

Of the countries thus far mentioned, Norway has been used before (Nightmare in Norway), as has Tonga (Uttati Asfet; modern), the Congo (The Black Seal; modern), Indonesia (The Long Reach of Evil), Mexico, Russia and Canada.

There is actually a reson NOT to choose a place you know to well.
Chances are that you will include WAY to many details.
"You get on the subway. This is the yellow line, bound for High street. At High street you change to the red line, traveling westwards. You go to Church street, where you change to..."
Noone cares about the names (or numbers) of public transportation, or where you change. "You get on the subway and change twice, before arriving at THE DESOLATE OLD HOUSE" is usually a better description.

On the other hand, the 1920s are usually far enough and mystical enough to prevent this "to close too home" syndrome.

How about the Appalachian Mountains in the US? Remote, but everyone speaks English (sort of...depending upon who you ask . ) You have bootlegging routes going through here as well as several moonshine operations for color. Now just add degenerate cultists and the odd witch.

yes this is what i meant to ask
    Thanks scholars.

Far too many very good ideas. Mexico is my favourite choice; all those ancient Aztec, Toltec (?) ruins from centuries past. Also reminds me i HAVE the Mesoamerican book ! doh.
Appalachians ive already done. Plus lots of other US states.
Norway is no good i think, got Nightmare in Norway by GW, but have never run it. How many PCs speak Norweigan (without been told to)? Or being from there, which limits their further adventures i think.

Hawaii is a great idea, i don’t think of it as part of the USA (sorry if that offends) they speak English
AND its in the Pacific, and we all know what that means. Bewahaha.

    Poland ???? dobryi dyan mmmmmm

Korea ?! wow THATS never been used.

looks like Im (my PCs) on a world tour !

    on a Zeppelin !

    thanks you brainy lot

Arabia must have been a pretty harrowing place in the 20s. Saud unified the bedouin tribes to form the Ikhwan, a horse-mounted army that shunned technology and swept through and conquered the regions that would become Saudi Arabia.

Maybe the investigators find themselves in a region relatively removed from the wars, where British military or civilians are falling prey to a lone madman. The murderer is an wizard whose mythos practices are heavily infused with Islamic tradition, and whose murders are revenge for the death of his family at the hands of foreigners.

Maybe the investigators become trapped in a dangerous backwater region ruled over by a ruthless family of deformed, leathery fanatics. This family enforces a twisted and essentially heretical reading of Islamic law, keeping its subjects in constant fear. Through their witch hunts they gather victims, first 'cleansing' them through torture in their windowless, ancient tower, then leading the victims down a staircase and into the subterranean human-farms beneath the desert, which are lorded over by obese, hyper-intelligent sand dwellers.

You could go all-out, too. Some of the Sunni dynasties are over a thousand years old; perhaps a crumbling dynasty invokes a djinn to keep the Ikhwan from overrunning their territory. A mythos-flavored genie would be really awesome. The djinn grants their wish, but enslaves the members of the dynasty, using them to each gather an tribe of horsemen. With an army of its own, the genie hopes to crush the Ikhwan and eventually fan out into Europe, Africa, and Asia.

If "hasn't been used before" is really important, I do believe the French Alps haven't. Lots of prehistoric remains lay here and there, some of which haven't been / shouldn't be found...

Otherwise I'd have mentionned Norway, Sweden, Canada...

I think India has had some brief attention, but seems rife for exploration. Sri Lanka/Ceylon/Serendip would be pretty awesome, too.

You've got pretty much all of South America. Peru get's a mention in one of the chapters of Day of the Beast, but that's about it.
