The Stanford Geospatial Network Model of the Roman World

    Hi,

An Ars Magica list gave this link - but it's probably even more relevant to Invictus:

    http://orbis.stanford.edu/

It calculates travel times in the Roman world. It is also a bit sensitive on the type of browser you have ...

This website is great! It's really interesting to see the travel times. Do you know if there are any similar maps for other eras?

Well, that would depend on whether or not there's reliable archaeological evidence for common routes and/or a standardization of routes in the first place. "Estimate is accurate, given a reasonable variation for local banditry."

Yes, it's good but as a resident of Aquae Suliss, I note that it doesn't include the Fosse Way. Not sure why.

    Wikipedia:
The Fosse Way was a Roman road in England that linked Exeter (Isca Dumnoniorum) in South West England to Lincoln (Lindum Colonia) in Lincolnshire, via Ilchester (Lindinis), Bath (Aquae Sulis), Cirencester (Corinium) and Leicester (Ratae Corieltauvorum).

You might want to bookmark http://omnesviae.org/ too... it does much the same thing, independently.

Thanks - this is an excellent site for road travel.

The Stanford Orbis site looks awesome. Have to play with that one for a bit.

For a quick fast guide to sailing around the eastern Mare Nostrum you might want to look at Mercator by Paul Elliot. It's an adaptation of the old classic Traveller rules set to being a sea trader in the Roman Empire. See link below:

It is an excellent page but it does not compute travel over water, only land based travel.
