    Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath?

I recently had an idea that I would abandon my current sad attempt at a Mythos-themed game in favor of an RPG based on The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. What I'd like to know is, would anyone play it? Would anyone be interested if I made it? And also importantly, would there be any copyright complications? If it were to be made I would not plan to sell it.

So are you talking about a new scenario for an existing RPG or a new RPG altogether?

Sorry, I should have been more clear. This would be a new PC game.

Ah - I think that would be cool.

And do you have any links to your current endeavor?

    Thanks!

As for the current endeavor... it exists only on my computer, and consists of about 1/3 of Arkham with a hard-to-control character, and approximately one church with a Shoggoth and four Mythos idols inside of it.

Why not start simpler with a text adventure?

In my case, a text adventure would actually be harder to pull off. :P

Plus, there's already a text adventure for Kadath, although it's incredibly outdated and entirely in Spanish.

The problem with the dream quest is that it effectively consists of walk - talk - walk - talk - get NPC drunk - walk - talk - talk - talk - get kidnapped - get locked up - get rescued - jump - walk - wait - wait - wait - sit on ship - walk - talk - get kidnapped - walk - talk - walk - watch battle - walk - eavesdrop - walk - talk - watch battle, etc., etc.

That said, a Skyrimesque version of the dreamlands (very little combat, barter only, the ability to "dream" items into being the stronger you get within the game) could be rather wonderful.

I have thought about that, and I've decided that I will unfortunately probably have to inject or overdramatize things to make them more interesting. Ex. Nyarlathotep battle instead of encounter, various quest, etc.
I never thought about the dreaming things up idea. That's actually a really cool concept!

Just make it more exciting than the original story. Do it for sanity's sake.

It's been a long time since I read them, but I think Brian Lumley's Dreamlands series were a lot more action orientated than any of Lovecraft's stories (not that that's saying much).

As much as I love the original story, I have to agree with you - at times it was incredibly monotonous. I remember it rambled on constantly about things that weren't really that interesting.

I'd be interested in playing this. I'm not a lawyer, but I don't see any copyright problems under U.S. law, as all of Lovecrafts works are public domain as far as I know. If you bring in Lumley, that may change things. I also don't know if there will be copyright issues with other countries' laws.

It is very boring. I just listened to it a couple weeks ago.

Wasn't there a lot of, "And then Pickman did this, and they didn't know what to do. So then the night-gaunts did this, and they signed a treaty. The treaty detailed this and this and this, and this and this, and this was seen by X and Y as good. But Z had a problem, and so they rewrote it to include this and this and this..."
