Have your players ever insisted to play themselves?

I recently had a demand from my group to play themselves in a CoC game?

I have runned a 5 game campaing in a zombie outbreak setting with some cultist, they all died horrible ways One of my player even suicide himself (that was surprising) It was all but heoric.

We had a lot of fun, but my group didn't think that I would kill them. That was a shoc for them... but they were too agressive so...

Have you ever try something similar? have you killed them? how did they react and most of all? what was the most fun and most problematic part?

The more fun we had was all the question... do we kill the friend who got infected or do we wait for him to turn... when he was standing beside us (in game and in life) not talking, shocked of the discussions.

The more trouble i had is when I killed the kid of one of them and when a girlfriend turn. That was... delicate.

Fortunately for me, the first death was by suicide so I didn't had to ''kill someone first''

No but I had a GM request the players make chars that at least closely resembled us. We didn't die, we kicked ass.

I hadn't done this before, but I know Skype of Cthulhu has done it for their "Legs" scenatrio (Part 1 here).

They took it a bit silly, but it's a great (and hilarious) listen.

Two of my players picked professions that they are currently employed in. Closest I can see my group getting to playing themselves.

No thank gods and if they asked to I would say no. Lets see here 2 ex military, married to each other. 1 is now a pillar of the community and has ins ever where, the other is a Computer Coding GOD. The next duo are brothers, one is a ex paramedic, studying for Doctors assistant. The other almost went into the navy for nuke sub engineering, but decided to become a mechanic instead. I'm not kidding when i say this man can fix anything. The last player I have is my current girlfriend, I will leave it at that as she looks at this forum at times.
That group would be dangerous for me to play against, glad they normally play Characters from from themselves.

Characters playing themselves is just a recipe for disaster...

That is absolutely true I had done something different to avoir this kind of argumentarion I tell them that the would have a 17 à 16, a 14, two 12 and one 10 to distribute in theirs stats in order to balance the group and avoir the ''I am the strongest'' argumentations. I let them decide what they thought was theirs main ability and what was the week one. That was vell recieved in my group. For the education, it was depending of the degree of education acheived and the complementary courses taken for jod or the like.

    That works very well.

Yes - a friend ran All Flesh Must be Eaten and we all played ourselves. I didn't really enjoy it, personally. The biggest problem he ran into was that several of us had information about the county that he didn't realize. I was an editor for a daily newspaper in the (admittedly small-town) area and had back door telephone numbers memorized for local 911 and police and fire departments and the like. I knew a lot of the people who worked for several of such departments around the county and even the non-emergency (and not well-known) number for the local 911 - so despite lines being clogged along regular routes, I could get through.

Another player had worked for a cleaning company that had keys for numerous government buildings in the county, so that posed a bit of problem for the GM as well. When players play themselves on their home turf (or in their home town), the GM can't just say "You can't do that" because that is one of the reasons why you would play yourselves - for that information and for those connections.

In the end, I didn't enjoy it a lot. Unfortunately.

That is most unfortunate indeed. I see that for the majority that wasn't fun or doable at all.

Well eiter I an a great game master (no comment there plz), or I have a very... submited group. Because for us, it was a lot of fun. Expecialy the mad scientist/cultist ingected with mutagen.

For my old groups, this was a yearly Halloween game tradition!

We would usually come up with a zombie invasion game, and we always had a setup that limited gear and resources. My favorite was our group coming back from an Amtgard event. Amtgard is a live-action foam combat game with regular weekend-long camping events. So, the scenario would be the group of players driving back from an out of state gathering with all their camping gear, garb and foam weapons. Most of us do have steel weapons for court purposes, but we'd still have limits.

We never survived very long, but it was a blast every time.

Yes our group has done this before. It required brutal honesty. Luckily, we are all mature enough and have robust sense of humour so there had to be group concensus on people's skill ratings and stats. We did reasonably well but it was funny having a Security Officer, two unemployed people, a university student and a child care worker battling the minions of The Great Old Ones. Yes....there were multiple fatalities.

My players request this all the time. It's a nice break from a lengthy campaign to play a "What If..." scenario with characters based off of yourselves. These adventures usually end up being INCREDIBLY campy and ridiculous, especially since I tend to make up the scenarios as I go with no preparation in advance. They always die horrifically and it's always a freakin' blast.

Let's see, one time they all got killed by Deep Ones while trying to stop the summoning of Cthulhu (I actually made myself the principal villain here; it was quite fun). Another time they all gained super powers and fought an eternal wizard. We did a classic Zombie Apoc setting (that seems to be a theme among these).

Oh! And my personal favorite: I had spent two or three days reading Dante's THE DEVINE COMEDY, and impulsively I made a map of Dante's Hell and placed my players (playing themselves recently dead in a car crash) right in the first circle. They had to work their way to the bottom of the ninth circle and earn their way out of the Inferno. I had a delightful time explaining to each of them their sins and what circle of hell they belonged in. Only one of them escaped and proceeded to Purgatorio.

What a great idea. With the Hell and all.
