    Cabin in the Woods

I just watched it and cannot say too many good things about it!

It mostly is a comedy but plays the horror straight (kinda like American Werewolf in London). I'm not going to get all spoiler on you (I'll leave that for IMDB) but I must say that if you are into horror with huge dollop of comedy mixed in then this is the movie for you.

Note that I will not spoiler now but after Friday no guarantees.

I was thinking of seeing this, but was afraid the trailer gave too much away. In your opinion, did it?

there was one thing I thought it gave away but the movie is not predicated on surprises. In fact the thing you are probably thinking is given away (the Sci-Fi element) is shown right away.

Cool - thanks. Sounds like this one is better to wait until it comes out on video.

Depends on your tastes of course, but I thought the excellent crowd reception really added to the experience.

Let me know what you think when you do get around to seeing it.

    Cheers!

I saw this today and, whilst it was witty and original in parts, was nowhere near as clever as Joss Wheedon seems to think it is (at least in my opinion). Worth seeing though, especially as there is a very evident and explicit Lovecraftian element to the film which is central the plot.

One of the reasons I posted it here. Also some thing I wasn't going to reveal.

I can definitely see a certain smugness peeking through the cracks but it didn't bother me in the slightest. I thought it was very entertaining.

Hope I haven't given away a massive spoiler! Tried to couch it in as vague and generalised way as possible (and the Lovecraftian elements begin to filter through fairly early on in the film). Thought it was worth mentioning, though, for the same reasons. I think also think I've been a little harsh on the film - it is very good and worth seeing, and filled with lots of fun, geeky fanboy moments. Just not sure that it is a 'game changer' as a lot of people are claiming, especially as parts of the film cover some similar ground to the Scream franchise in playing with the standard tropes of horror movies.

No, no, I gave a warning on my first post that after Friday there was no guarantee.

Beside the film is not set up to have big surprises.

Here is a great (SPOILER FILLED) dissection of the film.

Holy ****! Jobs Whedon made the most H.P. Lovecraft type movie I have ever seen. I have never been quite this disturbed by a movie. No lone cheesey evil bad guy with a stupid story line. We are talking about deep darkness with sister plans at work. My brain is working overtime thinking of the horrible things that must be done. Don't want to give anything away that the previews have not already done. All I can say is that there are still stars in the sky and that they are not right, yet...

    Go see this movie.

    Your mind will be shattered.

I went to see it with my partner yesterday, and we really enjoyed it. I make it to the movie theater extremely rarely, and I'm glad we went. My only real (and, in the end, slight) issue was that I disliked one character in particular; I don't know if it was the actor or how he was directed (the writing for that character seemed fine--even quite good in places).

I don't think this qualifies as a spoiler, so I'll simply register my distaste for the stoner character. While the movie is certainly comedic, the extremely stereotyped parody that was this character (especially in comparison to his companions) was annoying. As I said, many of his lines were good but delivered in such a way to negate that. Don't get me wrong, it didn't stop me from enjoying the movie. He doesn't overshadow anything. I just groaned a little on occasion.

Glad to find there's a thread here already about this movie I saw it the other day. Knew nothing going into it. Hubby and I enjoyed it a lot.

Anyway I learned today of a call for papers for a special issue of Slayage journal. The special issue is to be about Cabin in the Woods, and because of the Lovecraftian connections this film has I thought some writers here might be interested in contributing a piece. Especially anyone with an academic/film studies leaning. But really anyone would be welcome. For more information see here.

I liked the movie a lot, the Lovecraftian bits were just icing on the cake.
