What else do you play or run apart from CoC?

    Hi all,
Been running CoC sessions now for over a year solid, and still loving it. Once I finish "Tatters", wondering about offering my players something different...maybe Invictus or the new Gaslight?
Wondered what other games you play or run that hit the same notes. Have considered maybe a World of Darkness game,or perhaps Unknown Armies. Thoughts?

I am partial to Invictus. It strikes me that characters are much more fragile as the Psychoanalysis and Psychology are out, and sanity recovery mechanisms are much more limited. Also, if one insists upon culturally relevant weapons for the Romans, one quickly finds that they cannot pierce much of the natural armor of mythos beasties except with the luckest of rolls and a damage bonus. So, players quickly figure out that it is an investigative game.

Also, other than a few modules, there isn't a great deal out there, so the Keeper has to be inventive; that appeals to me. A quick browse through Roman history and literature will, however, offer a good many suggestions. This is how I come up with material for my Invictus campaign; a couple evenings of browsing around and playing with the material mentally, and the campaign nearly writes itself.

I have not seen the new Gaslight, as I am waiting for the print edition. However, I was always fond of the Flashman series of novels. by George MacDonald Fraser, and though it would be difficult to do, I think it would be very interesting to use the concept with Call of Cthulhu mechanics (BRP mechanics) to create a story line in which the investigators are continually beset not only with Mythos aspects, but with this completely useless NPC who has every bad attribute one can think of except thievery; I suppose one would alternate between the aspects of the Mythos and the comedy of Flashman-esque antics.

Before the release of BRP, I was always partial to Chivalry and Sorcery, especially in its (newer) 3d and 4th editions. Also, a blast from the past, Privateers and Gentlemen has recently been re-released. Both of these could be used for flavor and the BRP/Call of Cthulhu mechanisms used for skills and resolution of game aspects.

I'm very partial to the flexibility of the BRP rules, so a wide range of scenarios and settings are available via that game engine. Otherwise, I enjoy Trail of Cthulhu. The Gumshoe game engine rewards investigation and challenges the players to use the clues they are given to solve the mystery before them, all the while trying to stay sane.

I only run CoC, as it's the only system I know inside out. That said, I am looking forward to trying out Wild Talents, particularly the Kerberos Club setting which was recommended to me here on YSDC though I forget by whom. Otherwise I play Dark Heresy, Dread and looking into Runequest. DH I like because the setting easily incorporate investigation/subterfuge or all-out battles, it is a bit rules heavy though (which is why I only play and don't GM, this is also why I'm not fond of D20). Dread is a nice little diceless system that uses a Jenga tower to resolve actions, fantastic amounts of tension generated during gameplay which is great for horror games. Dread needs a really strong GM though so I'm not really experienced enough to run it...

In addition to CoC, I regularly run Warhammer FRP and Legend of the Five Rings (L5R). Love them all for different reasons. They are varied enough in setting and mechanics to keep things fresh, while sharing the trait of having decent wells of published scenarios with rich and engaging investigations and narratives involving battles Vs. Dark cults and supernatural horrors.

I play CoC and ToC, I also like Nobilis. More likely we are going to play The Laundry with SoC soon, and we are currently playing Invictus. We are going through the 3rd scenario right now. Invictus right now has a lot of support from MRP, The Legacy of Arrius Lurco is really good and there is also the Rome book in case someone has the time to read and expand in the world, for now, even though I have it, I had to rely on the campaign and Invictus books only, but I hope I can expand more in the following scenarios of the campaign.

We run Dark Heresy apart from Cthulhu.

Investigating heretical activity as members of the Inquisition in a very distant and very dark future. Featuring vile Cults, mutants, demons and dark gods followed by Insanity Corruption and Death for the players! Oh and did i mention chainswords? We love those chainswords!

There are different ways to run it according to your style. Combat heavy with heroic characters, or survival horror like and deadly for the players.

I just started an OpenQuest campaign. I'm looking forward to running the Life and Death mini-campaign. With its stumbling, moaning zombie hordes, flesh-eating ghouls and tentacled, lurking demons, I think it'll strike a chord with my group of long-time Cthulhu players, at the same time as being different enough to seem like a change.

I'm running an Unknown Armies campaign currently. My campaign before that was Shadows Over Filmland for Trail of Cthulhu. I've also recently run some one-shots of This Favored Land (Civil War-era secret societies and super(natural) powers) for Wild Talents and Fear Itself.

It's probably easier listing what we don't play. We're Indinistas so we play a lot of one shot games although recently we've played a Mutant City Blues campaign and now we've started on Night's Black Agents.

I go to a lot of local conventions, so I play a wide variety of systems. Just this past weekend at DunDraCon, I played Agents of S.W.I.N.G. (FATE does The Avengers or The Man from U.N.C.L.E.), Hollow Earth Expedition ('30s pulp), Cthulhu Dark, and Fudge. I also play Shadowrun (4th ed) and Eclipse Phase in regular campaigns, and I have a monthly group that rotates GMs to run one-shots.

I'm also starting on Night's Black Agents, which I plan to run at another con in April. I've never taken to Gumshoe, but I can see it working with NBA's "Jason Bourne vs. vampire conspiracy" angle.

We've done some WHFRP too. It's called Reliquary 13. It was originally a Burning Wheel game but we used Cthulhu Dark last itme.
