Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

I recently bought Dark Corners of the Earth (DCotE) from a friend (then bashed my head through a wall after finding it on Steam). While it's not quite bug free, it's a lot of fun. It's also one of the only games that has genuinely made me turn the lights back on. Has anyone else here played it?

I had a look at it a while ago but couldn't find a copy for a reasonable price (at least in New Zealand). However, for 6 quid on Steam I might be tempted. Thanks for the heads up.

Yup, theres a few old threads around.

Its very good for the first half of the game, full of interesting plot, investigation, and excitement Unfortunately the developers ran put of money and it shows a little, becoming more of a fps. Still very worth gettibg though, i enjoyed it alot. The atmosphere for the early chapters is excellent.

I played this on a borrowed X-Box when it first came out.

I loved the first part (set in Innsmouth) - very well done on the atmosphere.

I loved it. Lost track of how many different ways I died. The resolution at the end is hard to figure out, however.

Before my gfx card died I used to play this over and over. The first part is wonderful, and while the second part is weaker I wouldn't call it bad. There aren't many FPS' that make me hide in a corner and wish I could avoid the bad guys instead of fighting them.

Does anyone know if the steam version works on Vista? I tried playing my copy on my sister's PC but there's a bit where you can't zoom in on the reef like your supposed to which makes it impossible to complete.
It's beginning to look a lot like fishmen...

I've played this over and over on the PC, great game! I've heard rumours that the xbox version doesn't play on the 360, is this true? Would love to get again...

According to Wikipedia, North American NCSC and PAL 50Hz 'work' on the 360, but "Occasionally dialogue audio is replaced by loud static; Music does not play at all. Has quite a few bugs, including water not appearing at all in the game (does not break anything by not being there). Still, it can be played to the end though some bugs will force the player to replay sections of the game from an earlier save."

So, no it doesn't... Thanks MGN001 for looking it up though...

I thought the best thing about it was the vertigo effect - if you are up high and see a big drop the sanity effect kicks in and your screen warps. It makes for a really good Don't Look Down effect. More games should use it.

    The
    Spoiler:
bit in the hotel room where the bad guys come to get you
is one of my favourite moments in all of gaming.

Sadly, the Tommy Gun sucked, which was a great disappointment.

I agree that the hotel sequence is excellent - far more pulse-pounding than the "follow-the-AI", "run-n-gun" offered up by a lot of current FPS titles. And the soundtrack has to be one of the most memorable I've heard in a game. One thing that drags Dark Corners through the mire is that it can, at times, be MONUMENTALLY, borderline break-the-controller frustrating. I mean, respawning bad guys as a way of maintaining tension? Grrr. I also seem to remember a smorgasboard of game-breaking bugs too. Nyaaargh.

Best horror game I´ve ever played, probably because I love CoC (although Bioshock was awesome). I will love to see a remake with the updated engine, I could´t finish it because I sold my xbox to upgrade to 360, and as many other good games, it doesn´t run. The problem is that this was not very popular, because when it came out, it was already behind the graphic power of other games already in the market, mainly because of the time it took for the developers ro write it.
