I feel the lack of graphical power was a strength of the game, as strange as that sounds. The fact that everything looked a bit off model gave it a really eerie feel for me.

Agree, but that was the main reason of why it didn't go mainstream.

Don't mean to contradict, but I thoght it did okay in sales, there was even another CoC game in the offing but the company making it folded... Not Bethesda of course but the smaller company who's name escapes me...

I LOVED this game. Still do.

The thing I liked the best about it was how it tied so many different aspects of the Cthulhu Mythos into one coherent whole. I won't add any spoilers, but anyone who has read HPL's more popular works will have a much better experience than a non-fan.

My main complaints were that the many enemies were not very clever and rather easy to evade. The game suffers from a problem of an overly stupid AI, and enemies will stop chasing you after you hide for a few seconds, often just on the other side of a garbage bin or somesuch.

Despite that, this is one of my favourite games, hands down.

I really enjoyed playing this game on PC.

Unfortunately it was shipped with a bug or two, and because of one of those bugs I was unable to complete the game - there's a section in the Innsmouth Refinery section where you have to activate a panel to bypass a BIG BAD MONSTER and in the bugged version the 'activation' of the panel does not 'register' and you are essentially stuck.

Am interested to hear that the game is now available on Steam. Presumably such a version would be bug free and I could attempt to complete it....

Has anyone here completed it on Steam for PC ?

One thing that drags Dark Corners through the mire is that it can, at times, be MONUMENTALLY, borderline break-the-controller frustrating. I mean, respawning bad guys as a way of maintaining tension? Grrr. I also seem to remember a smorgasboard of game-breaking bugs too. Nyaaargh.
The bugs ended up being the thing that caused me to never finish the game. I'd was playing on an Xbox and would like to think the PC version may have gotten a few updates to fix some of the major problems but it's a long shot. A really cool atmosphere and a lot of great concepts I haven't seen done elsewhere, but there were a lot of really frustrating sections. I remember restarting the game from scratch more than once. If anything is a stronger endorsement for proper tabletop cooperative storytelling between a group of players and a GM than a video game with crippling bugs that completely ruins your enjoyment I don't know what it.

On a semi-related note what I've heard of Alan Wake seems to be Mythos-suggestive (and has now hit the magic $20 Amazon.com price point where I'll consider it). Has anyone who enjoyed Dark Corners (or who wanted to enjoy Dark Corners) tried it?

I had completed it on both xbox and refinery, repeatedly... As The Taterdemalion King said, not really sure how... A certain encounter on a boat took hours every time I did it... I'd heard rumors of a happy ending- never did get it...

It certainly had one of the best interpretations of the Great Race that I've seen... actually made them look feasable.

Apparently there's no happy ending as such, but you do get an extra clip

If it's the one I'm thinking of...

    Spoiler:
Hanging on at the front of the boat leaves you completely safe from his attacks except those coming from the front, but when you know he's coming up you have enough time to run to the turret anyway. He can't reach you when he pops up at the sides. If you're talking about shelling the island, yeah... I can't help you there. =P

This game is the main reason I still have my old xbox around. It is the only game I have for my old system, so you can tell how much I enjoyed it. I still wish I had something to run Shadows of the Comet on! Anyway, I love Lovecraft inspired games...but it would be great to see more mythos devoted games like Dark Corners of the Earth. It is a shame the Mountains of Madness game never made head way.

You need to try Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It's often for sale on Steam. I think I paid $10 but it's worth at least $30 IMO. Very mythos-y and does the insanity thing very well. And it doesn't turn into a combat first-person-shooter the way DCOTE does.

I own this, and I thought it was AWESOME! The first part really captured the feel of Innsmouth, it was fantastically creepy and spending a massive chunk of such a game with no weapon was refreshing, if not a little worrying. I'm not sure what the situation is with the Xbox compatibility, I played it on my 360 all the way through. I had to reload a couple of times due to bugs, but the only real pain i encountered was that the beginning of the final cut-scene always messed up.

I never knew about the company running out of cash, but i had noticed the difference between the early and latter parts of the game, it makes sense now...

I'm just downloading it on steam now, would have been playing it last night but it wouldn't work on my desktop (when I opened the trapdoor in the introduction cultist house the entire thing crashed and refused to open again), something to do with the windows media codec not being compatible with my system >.<

I wouldn't be bothered by it (that's a lie I paidbut it took me best part of 12 hours to download it because my internet is so slow (paying for up to 8mb/s, getting 0.013 (yes you read that right) mb/s, thank you very much sky unlimited, my download speed dropped to 7 bytes per sec for about half an hour too), so now I'm redownloading it on my old laptop (about 40% done so far).
