Thread: Macabre Tales: New Lovecraftian RPG

  1. #106
Just got the PDF. Had a quick skim of the rules, what can I say? Flipping heck!! I've been a fan of Lovecraft nearly forty years now, and playing RPGs since the early 1980s. Bought CoC when chaosium first launched it, never felt it got it quite right, so ever since then I've been searching for a RPG system that did the ideas of HP proud. I think I've found it.

Cool. Did you just get the core rules, or did you buy a bundle with one or both of the available adventure tales?

Bundle containing rules and both adventures from Drive Thru. Still studying but so far they seem really good

    Liebkraft/Michael,

Boy am I glad to hear from you! Between some nasty email trouble and my grandson passing away, I was kind of out of things for a while (as both John Almack and Daniel Robichaud can attest to). I sent you another email once things settled down a bit, but didn't hear back from you. I assumed that you were upset because I was incommunicado for a time. I'm happy to hear that that wasn't the case.

Please drop me an email as soon as possible (cynthia.spectrumgames@gmail.com), because I absolutely adored your adventure idea and still would like to get the ball rolling on it.

@Lone Kharnivore: I plan on making the character sheep available on our website... as soon as I get it back up and running. OfficeLive has shut down and I'm trying to find another service of the same nature so I can hook my spectrum-games.com domain name to it.

Oh and I'm happy that you like how the game looks.

@Priest: I can't express how thrilled that makes me. I'm beyond flattered that my vision of Lovecraftian roleplaying matches yours. I hope you enjoy it.

You, too, will come to understand fear as I have.

@ NeferSutekh, Just had a quick look over 'A Translation of Evil'. My compliments on an awesome piece of work.

Thank you. I did my best to create a very personal tale of psychological horror, as befitting the genre. I know that the scenario will not be everyone's "cup of tea", but I am glad that you enjoyed it.

    @ CynthiaCM,

Just one point. The actual rules PDF is accompanied by a copy that is printer friendly, the two adventures are not and as such are a nightmare to print. Just a point, so far I havn't found anything in the rules to quibble about. Just please, please, please keep the adventures coming, especially set in Britain .

I still find this system fascinating, although I'm not sure if the idea of a one player system a good idea, after all role-playing is by its nature a social activity and that speaks to me of groups not a single player.

I can agree with that, even though this particular system was designed as a social activity between two players (i.e. a Narrator and a Primary Character). The rules can handle more, but may play very differently with a larger group.

On a personal note, here is another online review of my scenario.

Don't get me wrong, like I said the idea of this system fascinates me to the point that every attempt at writing a Cthulhu scenario now is being dominated by the idea. It's just this idea of a two participant system (Narrator and Character) that seems difficult as it seems to depend on the players imagination and ability to role-play more so than group play, something that I, personaly, have seen precious little of during my years of role-playing (whatever the system). I would like to see it worked towards encompassing multiple players, but the idea of heaps of dominos cluttering the playing area is scary (the tabletop gets cluttered enough anyway). I am wracking my brains for a way to navigate this problem, but so far - nothing. So, any advice would be more than welcome.
