If you accept the argument that the a remake was inevitable (i.e. that someone was going to see the economic/market motive for making one) then I think fans of the original can be reasonably happy with the outcome (i.e. those fans who go and see it, and who don't avoid it on general principles).
For most of the movie, it's pretty faithful to the spirit of the original - and therein lies the rub. In being faithful, the film offers little different and many of the scenes are homages to Carpenter's vision.
However - I can't help thinking it could have been a lot worse; with perhaps a team of shiny toothed adolescent undergrads being picked off, only to be saved by a wise-cracking butt kicking hero.
My one real disappointment was with the decision in 'the final reel' to have them go inside the ship. I'd have preferred if we had left that particular location that to our imaginations.........
But all in all I was entertained, experienced one or two moments of genuine delight and really enjoyed the shoggoth like effects - which seemed to be a combination of 'original style' physical effects with CGI....
