Thumbs down In Search of Lovecraft

If you happen to see this movie on Watch Instantly on Netflix, or on DVD somewhere... avoid it.

It is the worst non-MST3K'd movie I've ever seen. The acting is in most cases worthy of a high school drama class, the fx are forgettable at best, and the script is about on par with everything else. You also get the least-convincing, oldest "high school girl" you'll find outside of certain specialist websites.

It focuses on a rookie tv reporter (in a laughably oversized jacket) who gets frustrated with her man-on-the-street assignment and decides to do a segment on Lovecraft for Hallowe'en, whereupon she discovers that his stories weren't fiction -- they were fact!

The best thing about the entire video is the cover.

And yet, all these months later, I can't quite get it out of my head...

Yeah, I made the mistake of watching that. I only made it through the first 10 minutes before I just move on to something else. TERRIBLE FILM!

Is this movie so bad that it's actually fun to watch with friends ?

We organize a bad movie contest every year with friends (with teams of two people competing with the others) with prizes and stuff, and my teammate and I inherited the horror movie genre this year.

So actually I'm looking for a really bad horror movie, so bad that it's almost "good" (ideally low budget, bad acting, awesome stupid dialog, bad FX, etc.).

Would you think that this movie could fit in ? Or do you know other flicks that might be even, err, "better" suited to make us win (there's a beer keg at stake here !)

For French readers, I'm looking for a true "nanar" gem !

PS : if you suggest any other movie, it must be something amazingly bad, that's pretty much unheard of, 'cause the first rule of our contest is that nobody else must have seen it !

I believe you might have a winner here, at least for the first 10 minutes.

I can't say if it's fun to watch with friends, because I made the mistake of watching it alone. One that probably fits the bill, however, is Conjure, starring Matt Busch, written by Matt Busch, directed by Matt Busch, and produced by Matt Busch. With cinematography by Matt Busch, and featuring a soundtrack by Matt Busch.

    Here's the IMDB page./

This is one I did watch with friends, and it was hilariously bad. The first few minutes are slow going (they're a documentary about Matt Busch) but then it gets bad. Er, good. You know what I mean.

Thank you Lord Krieg and kafkonia for your answers, both movies look HORRID from the trailers available on youtube.

My only concerns about them both would be if they are either student films or obviously MEANT to be funny/horrible, because they'd be disqualified from the get-go from our contest. We're looking for real atrocious flicks, like those turkish remakes of Star Wars for example... What do you guys think ?

Maybe I should start a thread somewhere on these boards, sorry for intruding...!

No, they're both legitimately bad films -- very low budget, but not spoofs, and not student films. Matt Busch is actually a very successful professional illustrator, as you'll find out in the opening portion of his film.

OK good, I'll hunt them down, thanks man !

@Danharms : Thank you Sir, as a proud Cthulhu Mythos Encyclopedia owner I owe you a scan of your suggestions. And I must say I am absolutely surprised to see Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter on your list, I saw that movie like twelve years ago and had no idea it was known whatsoever. I seem to remember it was a spoof though (thanks kafkonia, I was looking for that word), which would not be elligible for our contest... Gotta try to find a download link somewhere to stand corrected if need be.

Jesus Christ, Vampire Hunter is most definitely intended as a spoof. It was made here in Ottawa, and the director (who was previously responsible for the similar Harry Knuckles series) actually runs the local repertory cinema.

True, but I've also had people who immediately turned it off when they realized it was a musical. We should also remove Thankskilling from the running there, leaving us with some gaps. Let's see:

    Slaughtered Vomit Dolls

Bride of the Monster (substituted for Plan 9 as an Ed Wood movie your audience is less likely to have seen)

Tremens, one of my favorite bad movies is Beginning of the End, about giant grasshoppers in Chicago. Not sure if your group would count it as horror or science fiction, though.

If anyone has seen "The Last Lovecraft: The Relic of Cthulhu" it's one of those "so-bad-it's-good" films. I died laughing during the entirety of the film despite the bad special effects and sometimes terrible acting. However, for being a B-movie, I have definitely seen much MUCH worse.
