Thread: Call of Cthulhu 7th edition

    Call of Cthulhu 7th edition

I am not sure if that topic was discussed already.
It was confirmed that Chaosium is working on new edition. (As far as I know)
Does anyone knows something about it? How it will look like or what will be the rules differences?
I heard some rumors that this edition will be published in 2 separate books: one for keepers and second for players.

The very last word I heard on the subject was that it's not coming out until 2012.

Thanks a lot for the above thread. Very insightful...
I am wondering when Chaosium would like to share with us any official news about 7th edition.
From their point of view it would be good to start some kind of "hype" about that, or maybe they thought that we will buy everything they produce.
With my latest buy of Cthulhu Invictus Companion with almost carton-less cover I have more and more doubts in Chaosium quality.

I've only skimmed the thread on the new French CoC edition, but is there anything in particular in that which you'd like to see in the 7th edition?

Eek! If there are two books I hope the player's book is completely optional and everyone can work from the GM's book alone. I hate it when you have to buy multiple books, especially when they share a lot of content between them. Paying for the same thing twice sucks, and I for one would definitely skip 7th Edition if that's the case.

Yes, the French do it better. And since my French has grown...rusty...I'd love to see this book in a English edition.

The exact same trade dress... and maybe one or two of their rule variations.

I don't think the problem with the new edition is a matter of content, Gil. Let's face it, CoC is been almost perfect since day one, and the very cool things that could be added to it where added by Trail of Cthulhu, so there is not luck on moving those rules to CoC 7th edition. On the other hand, it seems that the French edition has some circles of influence, that would be interesting to see in play and how do they affect/help the players. I cannot speak of it since I don't have the French edition yet, but I am sure you will see more of that in the forums in a few months.

The main problem the 7th edition is facing right now is not in sense of content, but in sense of beauty. For some people art might not be important, because what you use is the rules at the end, but for a lot of us, if we are going to pay money for the same book (who doesn't own a copy of the CoC book here?) with some minor changes, we want some added value, and at the end it translates into art. The art of the book is very 80's, so it may work for the 45+ years old population, but not for those of of us that were caught in the anime revolution era that changed our old occidental view of art, and what about the 20s generations that do not know anything else? It just doesn't cut it.

I don't want to see anime in the book, but good art, the kind of art that Sans Detour was able to incorporate in their release. They also added a new (very lengthly it seems) scenario, that adds a lot for content.

Wow. Okay, I thought I was asking a legitimate question, in that I was honestly interested, and in reading through the French edition thread, I didn't see much discussion on content changes to 6th edition. Nevermind then...
Oops, sorry it took me so long to answer.

    Your question is perfectly legitimate.

As is our response, which is borne of a frustration at comparing the two most recent versions of Call of Cthulhu -- the thirtieth anniversary edition versus the new French "standard" edition. Given Chaosium's track record, we suspect that any seventh edition will be like previous "new editions," minimal alterations and an adherence to a layout that only truly worked in the twentieth anniversary edition. I personally feel that the sixth edition was an unnecessary step too far, and fear that I will end up feeling the same about the seventh.
