Gollancz's 'Eldritch Tales: A miscellany of the Macabre'

This tome is the companion to the 'Necronomicon', Gollancz's publication of HPL's better known works.
It has the same Black and Gold hard cover, making them look on and making a nice statement on the bookshelf. It consists of a large number of his more obscure works, including his poetry, which I haven't seen published since the GW edition of the CoC core rulebook (if anyone else has let me know!). Whilst I don't think he could ever be considered as one of the great poets of the age, its does still contain the wierd and wonderful use of images that we all love. This, plus a number of short stories, the man's essay 'Supernatural Horror in Literature'. All in all not a bad little package for £10.99.

Definitely worth picking up. If nothing else, it's a great companion to the Gollancz Necronomicon.

I've been eyeing this one up, but I can't find a list of what stories are in it. Can anyone help?
Frankly, no one should be walking away from the smoking end of an elephant gun. ...Except maybe a really hard elephant.

There are over 60 works in it, including poetry. Probably the most well known, apart from the essay, are 'Nyarlothotep' and 'Notes on the Necronomicon'. It does also give a list of collabrative stories that are note included, giving the possibilty of a 3rd volume to this set, which I would look forward to...

    You mean this one:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Eldritch-Tal.../dp/0575099356

I looked it up as you don't say if you are actually selling a copy or just posting as you've bought it? Note the reviews as it discusses how many pages long it is.

    Also cheaper here:

    http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/Eldr.../9780575099357

Perhaps because it's got less pages.
Please have a read of the game "The Sanitarium," on my Blog. Say what you think!

Sorry, yeah, I bought it a few days ago. I didn't really take any notice of the page total, I've got most of HPL's works in various publications, I bought it because it looked cool (shallow I know!). Was pleasently surprised to find poetry as I haven't seen any of that published for a long while.

I got my copy of Eldritch Tales today, pictures on my Twitter.
    Necronomicon ~878 pages
    Eldritch Tales ~537

I will add internal pictures of both, including story lists in just a moment.

EDIT: More pictures of Eldritch Tales added to Twitter.

No harm in liking it because it looks cool!

I too was pleasantly surprised by the poetry. I've not really encountered much Lovecraft poetry before this, so it was a fortunate find. My only niggle is that the Eldritch book is a smidge shorter than the Necronomicon and therefore not a perfect match on my shelf (how is that for shallow? :P)

Lovecraft's complete poetry was published by Night Shade Books in 2001.

I have leafed through Eldritch Tales, and it seems like a completely random grab-bag. I was especially displeased to see that "The Challenge from Beyond" reprints only Lovecraft's segment of this round-robin, without mentioning that this isn't the complete story. And the bibliography at the end is highly dubious (who the heck lists "The Survivor" among HPL's revisions in 2011?).

But I'll probably get it anyway.

    A very good point.

I have to admit I bought it sight unseen, based on the Necronomicon. I'm 100% guilty of impulse buying regarding most things Mythos. I thought that's where you were going.

Well, I don't really need it as I already have all of HPL's fiction, poetry and essays in better editions, but it looks nice and as I said, it is useful to know it in order to be able to recommend better editions.
