Locke and Key graphic novel to become TV show

Vulture hears Steven Spielberg, via DreamWorks TV, is teaming with mega-hyphenates Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Transformers, Hawaii Five-O, Fringe) and writer/exec producer Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) to turn Joe Hill's Locke & Key comic series into a major TV franchise. Oh, and did we mention that Hill is Stephen King's son?

First released in 2008, Locke & Key revolves around three kids who end up watching over a secret, spooky New England mansion filled with mystical doors that transport them to different worlds and give them special powers (like turning into a ghost).

I got the first trade paperback of these from my Secret Shoggoth this past season, so I'm interested in seeing what they do with the story. I'm not sure how well it'll translate to series. The Lovecraftian ties are many and varied, including the name of the main location called Lovecraft.

I read the first series and really enjoyed it, although I could see more of Big Daddy Stephen's influence in it than HPL's, despite the namedrop. That said, I'm interested in seeing how it turns out as a TV show.

Did this ever come out? If you've seen it, how was it?

As far as I can tell they filmed a pilot episode but it didn't get picked up by the networks for a full series. A trailer for the pilot has made its way online:

Hmm, it looks pretty faithful to the comic, which caused me to think, "why hasn't this been picked up?" Then I saw it was for Fox, a network that seems to love to start genre shows, just to cancel them one season, or not even that, later. Maybe it's a good thing Fox didn't pick up this show, maybe the producers can sell it to AMC or FX or some other network that seems to understand an appreciate shows other than (un)reality television. Here's hoping.

Honestly, with how well HBO is treating Game of Thrones, I think Locke & Key should go there. I loved the L&K trailer, but then the news of Fox dropping the show didn't surprise me at all. Knuckleheads.
