As a del Toro fan I was excited about this project years ago, back when it was a dream whispered on the night winds and nothing more. Now that it might actually see the light of day, I’m positively giddy.
No Nyarlathotep, no chaos.
Know Nyarlathotep, know chaos.
i can personally imagine sam rockwell in this. has anyone seen him in Moon? or even confessions of a dangerous mind? yes, usually he can be comedic, but he does a great job of "unraveling".
Patrick Wilson would be another choice, he's nice looking, can pull off being intelligent, and can also scream and freak out well too (Hard Candy). of course these are just my opinions...
on i side note i am excited about GTD on this project. i love his movies (especially hellboy) and even though they are shooting in 3d doesn't mean much. Coraline was filmed in 3D and yet was released in both 2d and 3d. i just wish i knew when to expect it. haven't been excited about a movie in a while.
James McAvoy is being touted as playing a part in this which I think would be fine. As to Cruise, I'm not so sure. It would be a bit of a departure for him surely...
Two other questions:
1. Will they be able to resist giving a leading part to an actress in spite of the fact that there are no women in the story?
2. If the movie is a success, what chance is there of getting a Beyond the Mountains of Madness adaptation as a sequel?

Now there is optimism for you!
Unfortunately, I must agree regarding actresses. Del Toro certainly hasn't mentioned that the movie would be an 'all-male' cast. Besides! Who is going to scream! It's only culturally acceptable for women to scream on screen!
As to BTMoM, that will never happen. It is not 'accepted' as part of the Lovecraft canon.
In such a case, it could have more to do with owning the rights to the script?
I'm quite flexible on adaptations to other media. If Del Toro wanted to change some of the characters to women (without being "screamers" - and from seeing Del Toro's other films I'd be surprised if there were such), then I'd certainly be OK with that.

Nope, I never read it as I didn't want spoilers but I gather that the new script differs substantially anyway. I have no problems with women being in the film or any other changes as long as it remains faithful to HPL and what lies at the heart of the story. If he is retaining that idea from the old script then that would work for me even though it's not part of the original story.
