I'm delighted that with Cameron's backing DT will finally be able to get AtMoM off the ground. But the 3D aspect dampens my enthusiasm a little. I've yet to be convinced that 3D is little more than a gimmick to get people to pay more money for a darker screen image. I'm concerned that by the time AtMoM hits the big screen (will it happen before or after DT's Haunted Mansion?) the 3D fad will have passed and audiences will be bored with the concept.

Money, Cameron has in spades, but I don't know about sheer balls....Titanic, Avatar and Terminator were entertaining, but not ballsy, ballish nor balltastic in my opinion. Good Hollywood flix fer sure. Hope for the best.....Del Toro is a man with good Lovecraftian street cred. I have hopes...I have dreams....I think you're forgetting that this is one of the reasons Cameron is in the place that he is- to make sure crap like that doesn't happen. As producer, he is not only the person who will round up the money for del Toro, but he will also act as a buffer between the studio and GDT. And since it's Cameron we're talking about here, he's got the clout, and the sheer balls, to tell the studio to go hug a rope if they make demands like that.

While Cameron's films aren't really all that edgy or ballsy from a story sense, many of his projects themselves have been hugely ambitious from a production standpoint, boasting huge budgets and risky/unproven technology.Money, Cameron has in spades, but I don't know about sheer balls....Titanic, Avatar and Terminator were entertaining, but not ballsy, ballish nor balltastic in my opinion. As a man, he seems to relish the role of the outsider, the asshole (which seems to suit him), and to take the "I'll show them!" attitude. I hope he channels all of that "F U" energy (and money) in ATMoM and DOES show them. I hope he shows all of us.
This duo has the chops, that's for sure. I think, like others, casting might be the biggest annoyance for us die hard purists. But other than that, GTD/Cameron seem to have what it takes to do it right, and do it justice.

Indeed, I can't think of many movies that GDT or even James Cameron (as a director) has ever miscast. Whatever people may think of Cameron the director, nearly every actor he has cast has been memorable and interesting even if the story has, well, not been.As a man, he seems to relish the role of the outsider, the asshole (which seems to suit him), and to take the "I'll show them!" attitude. Arnold Schwarzenegger as a spy in True Lies. Now Schwarzenegger as a commando type, sure, or a killer cyborg from the future, naturally, but spies are supposed to go unnoticed and blend in. Where the hell is Schwarzenegger ever gonna blend in at? Yes, I liked True Lies, a lot, but the thought of Arnie as a spy always made me giggle.

Uh, that was a action comedy film Cthulhudude. So you were right to giggle. You know, like "Turner & Hooch" isn't really about detective work, but yes, the dog was cute.(TL was based on a French film that was more of straight farce.)

Well then it did its job well, as I laughed a lot in that movie, but through it all I was always, “Really, he’s a spy…really?” Sort of like when Arnie was in that movie Junior. No, not the guy gets pregnant thing, that was miles more believable than Arnold as a scientist.Unless he was playing a scientist trying to prove the benefits of freebasing steroids. Oh, and just because he puts on glasses does not = scientist, although it was a nice try.

An actual Lovecraft film was only a matter of time...
The thing that could sink a Mountains adaption, rather than 'hollywood romance' or 3D, is being too slavish to the story. It's extremely 'unfilmic' and lacks anything close to compelling characters; is there one character whose actions are worth remembering? If you're doing a film about the place of humanity in the universe then your in desperate need of some humanity, something that's lacking in virtually everything Lovecraft's ever written. Maybe some romance, or some glimmer of interest, wouldn't do the film any harm.
On the otherhand, del Toro doing crazy architecture, Shoggoths and Elder Things is just fine by me.
Seeing a Ghoul: 1D8 sanity
Stumbling into the Feast of Eihort: 1D20 sanity
Witnessing the rise of R'lyeh and Great Cthlhu: 1D100 sanity

I agree its exciting news, and I'm more pro- than Anti- Cameron...
However, we fans will have to temper our enthusiasm with some realism. We may love the original story, but there will no doubt be changes during the process in making it into a film...
...while we all hope we'll agree with most of the changes, lets not get too carried away with expectation.
Even if nothing has been changed, it may still not be the greatest of movies...look at Watchmen for example , a vaguely decent but not outstanding film based on a simply outstanding graphic novel.
Still Cameron and Del Toro have the right pedigree, so its promising. My main worry would be it might become too much of an actionfest, but lets wait and see...
I am hoping for something similar to Beyond the Mountains of Madness campaign. Obviously not that story, but where all the events took place as the original story says, and the movie is about going to investigate what happens. It leaves you able to create a more filmable story and still have all the epic landscapes, the Elder Things and shoggoths. An actual Lovecraft film was only a matter of time...
