I'm not surprised in the least.
No Nyarlathotep, no chaos.
Know Nyarlathotep, know chaos.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the stars are right. We just might get one of the few directors capable of adapting Lovecraft to film and keeping it scary. So far it ends up usually pretty humorous when physically shown. I have complete faith in GDT to pull this off. And Cameron knows epic scope, and how to leverage technology to get the best visuals on the screen. The 3D was the best part of the ThunderSmurf's film, so his help there could be great. GDT knows story, and he knows monsters.
See Hellboy 2 for a glimpse of one interpretation of Elder Things. They're skinnier than I usually envisioned them, but it's close. They're in the Troll Market as well as on an exam table at the BPRD headquarters in NYC.
Can't take the sky from me.
Yeah, not a fan of 3D at all (makes me kinda' nauseous), but I think Cameron and especially Del Toro will inject enough cash, clout, and "f**k it all" creativity into the project to do it right. If this actually produces something at long, long last I’ll be one happy Cthulhudude. I just might forgive Cameron for the glut of crappy 3D movies that he helped give birth to. Although I'm not thrilled that this will be in 3D, I’ll take this movie however I can get it.
Del Toro leaving The Hobbit put everything right in the Universe again.
I'm gonna' go spread the news...

Yeah, I have a huge budget Cthulhu/Mythos script in the works (which is basically a more interesting big monster/end of the world disaster movie than investagative thriller) that might get a profile boost if this goes off, and does as well as I think it will.
I truly can't believe that HPL's vision will hit the silver screen with this sort of financial, creative, and "big wig" backing after all these years, and all the failed attempts. It's extraordinary, and very, very exciting.

Exactly.Despite some strong opinions of him, Cameron is the only way GDT can do this right. As producer (not director), he is feared and respected by the rest of Hollywood. GDT needs his clout, his resources, etc. to get past execs and secure the financing to make this film. Otherwise, this is GDT's project all the way. Cameron has 3 films until 2013 and 6 in development right now.
In other words, he ain't got no time to direct.
Cameron will sheild del Toro and allow him to work within his own creative framework, without idiotic Hollywood suits adding in inane notes like "We need a romance angle in this," or "Does it have to end on such a downer?"
In other words, Cameron is the 700 pound lead blocker on the punt return, allowing del Toro to take this bad jack to the house untouched (apologies for the sports reference, but fall draws neigh).

You know what would be a real kick in the pants? If Del Toro asked either (or both!) the lovely and talented HPLHS fellows or Propnomicon to work on props for this.

I am anxiously awaiting this. I do hope it actually happens!

If there is a companion movie book too, this could really be a huge project for the HPLHS and a springboard for Chaosium. My chief worry at this point IS NOT THE MOVIE. It is for Chaosium. I have nothing but respect and admiration for the Little Company that Could--I just pray there isn't a colossal **** up between now and the movie that blows this chance to promote "Call of Cthulhu" as a tie-in. Yes, it doesn't exist now, but it would suck if they didn't try.
I don't want to sound like a downer, but I suspect Guillermo will probably be using effects house he worked with in the past for the effects in MoM, but it's still to early to tell, since shooting is only going to start next year
And regarding the tie-in with Chaosium, even if the movie studios say's no, that doesn't mean they can't do a guerrilla style marketing to try and promote the Call of Cthulhu game
Chaosium could still cash in anyway...
I remember my Dad taking Helen & I to a talk by Richard Ford at the Ilkley Literature Festival a few years ago (he was getting some books signed). There RF mentioned that his book Independence Day (a sequel to The Sportswriter) sold like gangbusters and a not insignificant part of that was because a certain film of the same name starring Will Smith came out the following year. Bookseller and buyers' confusion sold a lot of copies of RF's book apparently.
At least this one would be on topic.![]()

I have fears...genuine fears about casting.....
Hollywood might insist upon another alien smashing role for Wil Smith or insert Angelina Jolie in as a big suck lipped she-ggoth or something horrific.
"Almost nobody dances sober, unless they happen to be insane."
— H.P. Lovecraft
I doubt it will be Hollywood meats At The Mountains of Madness, I actually think Guillermo will be able to pull it off, just because he is H.P. Lovecraft fan, and this movie is kind of his baby, he's been trying to get it made for years, if someone else tried to make this, I would be afraid...
I doubt we are going to see big name Hollywood actors, Lovecraft's work is too much of a hard sell for Hollywood (no happy endings, no love story etc), Ron Pearlman I think will be in the movie, he was on the IMDB page for Mountains of Madness, before it got removed (this was some time ago)
I am really, really interested in seeing how the shoggoths will look![]()

I think you're forgetting that this is one of the reasons Cameron is in the place that he is- to make sure crap like that doesn't happen. As producer, he is not only the person who will round up the money for del Toro, but he will also act as a buffer between the studio and GDT. And since it's Cameron we're talking about here, he's got the clout, and the sheer balls, to tell the studio to go hug a rope if they make demands like that.

I wonder if Cameron is putting up any of the funding for the film out of his own pocket (a Hollywood "no no" that has nonetheless made people like Mel Gibson and George Lucas very, very wealthy), as he's probably sleeping on a mad mountain of cash after the unprecedented success of Avatar.
It really can't get any more perfect - from a director/producer standpoint - for a big budget HPL film than this. Fanboy helming, while untouchable (yet roundly disliked), super-successful techno-geek produces.
This rare alchemy just might give us what we've all been jonesing for lo these long years.
