James Cameron joins At the Mountains of Madness!

Earlier tonight Deadline.com broke the news that James Cameron would be producing Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness as a 3D film for Universal, and now the news has spread throughout the web!

Entertainment Weekly's Hollywood Insider, Bloody-disgusting.com, Shocktillyoudrop.com, the Los Angeles Times, Ain't It Cool News, MTV Movies Blog, New York Magazine, Collider.com, JoBlo.com, ComingSoon.net and horror-movies.ca (and literally dozens more) have all run with the story, so it looks like this is finally happening!

Pre-production begins soon and filming could begin in early 2011!

If this actually produces something at long, long last I’ll be one happy Cthulhudude. I just might forgive Cameron for the glut of crappy 3D movies that he helped give birth to. Although I'm not thrilled that this will be in 3D, I’ll take this movie however I can get it.

I am personally so excited over this, ever since Guillermo del Toro left the hobbit, I personally thought that this project would probably never see the light of day, as I understood it, part of the contract for doing the hobbit was that he could do At the mountains of madness. Just very happy to see that his adaptation will finally be seen, and that the stars are finally right
I personally could also not do with the 3D, but maybe they will release it in 2D as well

Cameron I can take or leave but if this news means (1) it's more certain to get made or (2) it'll get made sooner... then yay Cameron!

I guess this gives any new iterations of BtMoM a big kick up the production schedules.

Does this mean our quiet, delicate Miskatonic University professors are in for severe cases of acute testosterone poisoning?

Despite some strong opinions of him, Cameron is the only way GDT can do this right. As producer (not director), he is feared and respected by the rest of Hollywood. GDT needs his clout, his resources, etc. to get past execs and secure the financing to make this film. Otherwise, this is GDT's project all the way. Cameron has 3 films until 2013 and 6 in development right now.

In other words, he ain't got no time to direct.
