    Boats? (High-seas campaign idea)

I had this really cool idea for a campaign, where the characters would all be on some boat that gets trapped in a very thick, silvery mist, and there are these hideous sea worm monsters in the mist, that dressed in the shredded, bloodied tuxedos and evening gowns of former victims, that speak backwards (for example: "Yrtneprac ylevol tahw! Enid ot ecalp enif a ekam lliw siht!")

Problem is, I have no knowledge whatsoever about boats in general. So many stories and movies take place on cruise ships ('Deep Rising' 'Ghost Ship' 'Poseidon Adventure' etc) that I wouldn't really want to do one of those, but I thought perhaps some large private luxury yaht, or a dank of freighter or passenger ship of some sort. Any ideas? Any ideal time period (I was thinking World War One era, possibly)? I appreciate the help.

If you're serious about this, you can always find books on boating and the U.S. Coast Guard sponsors a program on boating and safety:

I have "Twin Peaks" flashbacks when you mention backwards speaking spectres.

Incidentally, I saw your profile and I have to say that it's a little more disturbing than usual.

I once had an idea for a small luxury liner accidently crashing onto some rocks above a deep one colony, inside a bigger campaign (Masks, Day of the Beast, etc.). Nothing came of it of course *sighs*.

I have a huge fondness for tying RPG events to historical or real world events, so I offer using the Sargasso Sea, Bermuda Triangle, or the real reason for the disappearance of the crew of the Mary Celeste as a basis for your seagoing voyage of the damned.

I've often thought about a game like this, but can never figure out the right mythos creature. The obvious choice are deep ones but that the players would probably be expecting those. I like your worm idea Scaevola.

Has anyone else done anything like that and what have you used?

Wasn't there an adventure in the long out of print book The Asylum and Other Places that involved an ocean liner? I've got the book at home, but of course i'm here at work, and can't verify my own guess. Sheesh.

(after checking the CoC product database here at Y-S...

The short scenario "The Mauretania" appears in both printings of The Asylum and in The Cthulhu Casebook. For more info go Here.
