    Eternal Lies campaign

I'll use this thread to update you on developments for the planned Trail of Cthulhu, Eternal Lies to be written by Will Hindmarch. The initial release info says:

A decade ago, a band of occult investigators battled against the summoning of an ancient and monstrous evil.

    They failed.

Now, you must piece together what went wrong. Investigate ancient crypts, abandoned estates, and festering slums. Explore choked jungles and the crushed psyches of your predecessors. Follow in their footprints and make new ones of your own. This time, there won't be another chance.

The world is yours to save - or lose

Eternal Lies, will have a sound track album designed for use in actual play, created by James Semple and a team of other musicians.

James Semple, has produced music for GUMSHOE including three tracks for Esoterrorists (Dissonance) and three track for Trail of Cthulhu (Four Shadows )

James told me "I plan to produce an orchestral suite of music to truly capture the atmosphere of this huge globe-spanning adventure. The music will include themes, action pieces and ambient tracks to set the atmosphere throughout the game. The music will be written in the style of early Hollywood epics such as King Kong however it will also include a world music feel incorporating instruments and sounds of the various regions explored. In total there will be 60 minutes of high-quality music and to help me on this epic undertaking I will be utilising the exceptional talents of composers Marie-Anne Fischer, Mike Torr and Yaiza Varona."

I must say, Simon, judging by the innovation in the books that Pelgrane have put out for ToC so far (most recently The Armitage Files and the upcoming Bookhounds of London), I am dying to see what you can do with a full campaign. A specific soundtrack? Wow! I have used theme music for campaigns during the last 20 years or so, so to get one with the campaign is really stunning!

The only "problem" I have with something such as this lovely campaign is it's 'status' on the Pelgrane website - "Planning". To me, its sounds like we'll have to wait another few years until it is available... Or?

By the way, thanks for the update, Simon!

We've agreed a concept and preliminary locations; by May we should have an outline, and some sample scenes. After a bit of back and forth, the writing will get underway. I'll playtest each section as it comes in, and with any luck I'll have a first drafy by August. I think this time next year is a realistic release date.

There will be some kind of limited edition version, leather bound certainly. I'd love to do a boxed set with handouts, documents and separate books for each section, but I'm not sure that's viable.

Yeah, we would love to see an update, especially on how the playtest at GenCon went!

Unfortunately, there was no play at GenCon. However, it's progressing well. Two sections (Los Angeles and the Intro) are complete, others are underway, and James Semple's music for these locations is amazing.

Would it be spoilerifc for me to give the locations away?

Maybe colour it white, like this, so people would have to highlight to read it?

And yes, we're going mad to know!

Sounds good - particularly like the integrated approach with the sound track. I look forward to seeing (and hearing ) it !

Being a fan of soundtracks I am delighted and intrigued to see how you will approach the idea of a campaign with music.

Perhaps you could have a set of ambient themes playing on a laptop with random algorithms alternating the soundscape, as you move to different locations the ref clicks the music player onto that location. Each time you visit the location you get the broad sweep of the area but due to the random variations it's never quite the same sound.
