    Execrable witchdoctors!

    http://harpers.org/archive/2008/06/0082063

No one is entirely sure when magical penis loss first came to Africa. One early incident was recounted by Dr. Sunday Ilechukwu, a psychiatrist, in a letter some years ago to the Transcultural Psychiatric Review. In 1975, while posted in Kaduna, in the north of Nigeria, Dr. Ilechukwu was sitting in his office when a policeman escorted in two men and asked for a medical assessment. One of the men had accused the other of making his penis disappear. This had caused a major disturbance in the street. As Ilechukwu tells it, the victim stared straight ahead during the examination, after which the doctor pronounced him normal. “Exclaiming,” Ilechukwu wrote, “the patient looked down at his groin for the first time, suggesting that the genitals had just reappeared.”

NAIROBI, Kenya — Attackers in Burundi chopped off the limbs of a 5-year-old albino boy and pulled out his mother's eye, killing them over the belief that their body parts would bring wealth and success, human rights activists said Friday.

Those deaths and other recent attacks in Tanzania are part of long pattern of violence against African albinos. At least 10,000 have been displaced or gone into hiding since attacks against them spiked in late 2007, the International Federation of the Red Cross says.

    Housebreakers Turn to Nudity
    25 May 2010

Harare — A CHEEKY suspected housebreaker caught in the nude in a Glen Lorne house last week tried to convince his captors that he was a wizard on a witchcraft mission.

Police sources said this was not an isolated case as criminals in the capital were using the same modus operandi.

Police said they had handled a number of cases in which criminals many of whom believe juju would enable them to go about their nefarious business undetected pretended to be wizards whenever they were caught.

The Glen Lorne suspect, Gracious Manganiso (20) of Epworth, was caught in the nude in the house at around 7:45am after gaining entry through a window.

He had reportedly stripped before climbing through the window and stealing various household goods.

Manganiso was in the company of Enias Maseya (27) and Cephas Geza (46), who are now in police custody.

CID spokesperson Detective Inspector Augustine Zimbili yesterday said: "Manganiso ransacked the house and stole clothes, blankets and a radio all valued at over US$500 and threw these out through the window to his two accomplices."

Det Insp Zimbili said one of the occupants of the house spotted Manganiso, who began pretending to be practising witchcraft.

The occupant raised alarm and a security guard at the premises went to investigate, at which point Manganiso's alleged accomplices fled. Manganiso leapt through an open window with the guard hot on his trail.

Det Insp Zimbili said the guard apprehended Manganiso with assistance from policemen patrolling the area.

"Police investigations later revealed that Manganiso was actually a thief who pretended to be a wizard. At the weekend, Manganiso led police to Epworth where we arrested Maseya and Geza," he said.

The three are expected to appear in court soon facing unlawful entry and theft charges.

(Reuters) - If Sebenzile Nsukwini's bones are anything to go by, the World Cup is going to pass off without a hitch and hosts South Africa are destined for great things.

"Eish, it is looking very good for South Africa," the 33-year-old Zulu witch-doctor said after casting her eyes over a seemingly random scattering of animal bones and sea shells during a seance in downtown Johannesburg.

A weekend newspaper report, vehemently denied by the South African government, of an "80 percent chance" of a terrorist attack during the June 11-July 11 soccer spectacular suggests her confidence is not universally shared.

But in Africa, where mysticism and magic play a part in many people's lives, pronouncements from a 'sangoma' such as Nsukwini can carry as much weight as those from governments, especially when it comes to the murky world of security agencies.

Dakar — Accusations of child witchcraft are on the rise in sub-Saharan Africa - spurred on by urbanization, poverty, conflict and fragmenting communities, creating a "multi-crisis" for already vulnerable children - says the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF).

A wide spectrum of children are at risk, including orphans, street-children, albinos, those with physical disabilities or abnormalities such as autism, those with aggressive or solitary temperaments, children who are unusually gifted; those who were born prematurely or in unusual positions, and twins.

As Al Qaeda digs in deeper throughout sub-Saharan Africa, maybe we can nudge one group of murderous religious nuts (black magic practitioners) to root out the other (Islamic extremists/terrorists).

It would be win/win for the rest of us, and quite interesting to watch from a safe distance.

MONROVIA, Liberia — The unlikeliest of activists — a rampaging elephant that locals claim was supernaturally possessed — has aired rural Liberians' frustrations with the country's profitable timber industry. * Locals said the elephant was possessed by human spirits and had channeled their frustrations into its rampages.

All well and good, unless your AQ are a bunch of Takfiris* and they hook up with the local cultists, in which case it's AK47s and human sacrifices.

    * Have seen Takfiris up close. Not a friendly lot.

A new UNICEF report says accusations of child witchcraft are on the rise in Africa — leaving kids vulnerable to abuse, abandonment, and horrific "exorcisms". http://theweek.com/article/index/205...witch-hysteria

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a suspect allegedly caught with four fresh human heads, as well as a heart, two hands, and female private parts.

Muyiwa Adejobi, the Command Public Relations Officer, said this on Monday, the suspect, Adelani Oroyomi, was noticed with a bag stained with blood at Onipanu area of Ota, a town in the state, by police officers attached to Onipanu Division, during a stop and search exercise by them.

Adejobi added that the 26 year-old culprit was nabbed when he was heading towards Iboro Ayetoro, and he later claimed that he intended to use the human parts for money rituals, as things are difficult for him and he could no longer make ends meet.

Religious establishments are not the only guilty party in the business of flirting with diabolic practices, in the name of getting rich quick. Armed robbers, kidnappers, blood money ritualists, cultists and even business men and women also acquire charms from occult specialist (who reside in remote places where they have more liberty to operate) to facilitate their endeavours usually at the expense of other innocent people.

Combating witchcraft may not be an item in the agenda of the government, but it is obvious that a majority of crimes committed in Nigeria is either assisted by or connected with witchcraft. Therefore, it is of supreme importance for every Nigerian, whether or not they are associated with the government, to ensure that our society is devoid of perpetrators of such practices by aiding the police and other related bodies in apprehending offenders. In the same vein, the masses regardless of their woes, should try as much as possible to tread in the path of steadfastness which is always rewarded in due course, bearing in mind that evil begets evil returns.

Two white rhinos were poached for their horns in South Africa this week, according to South African news reports and conservation organizations.

A male white rhino was struck down viciously on Wednesday morning by poachers armed with an AK-47 assault rifle. The bold attack reportedly occurred close to Masinda Camp in the iMfolozi Game Reserve--a place that is world famous for its successful restoration and conservation of the white rhino.

BUJUMBURA – A twelve-year old albino boy was killed late on Thursday by armed men in the central Burundi district of Kiganda in what authorities suspect could be linked to witchcraft.

Albino hunters kill their victims and use their blood and body parts for potions. Witchdoctors tell their clients that the body parts will bring them luck in love, life and business.

"The twelve-year-old albino was killed by four men with guns and knives. They cut off his left hand and fled away with it," Kiganda administrator Joseph Ntahuga, told Reuters on Friday.

Steytlerville, a small Karoo town, is being plagued by rumours of a shape-shifting monster, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

“The community says that the monster changes shape while you are looking at it,” Warrant Officer Zandisile Nelani said.

He said one man had reported it changed from a man wearing a suit into a pig and then into a bat. The creature had been sighted on a number of occasions near a church and only appeared at night, Nelani said.
