I voted for "The Thing". It's one of my favourite John Carpenter films.
Another film that can be passed off as vaguely Lovecraftian is "John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness". That film is creepy as hell!!!![]()

My point is, any movie without a direct Lovecraft reference of some kind should not be included in this discussion
Me too. That first shot of the seven gods of chaos frozen in crystal with the lamp bouncing off of them, showing us a gargantuan eye blinking at the sudden intrusion of light...the feeling I got from that scene is the same breathless cosmic awe I expect to find in the mythos.Originally Posted by beckyg
Also, the Hellboy Trade Paper Back has the author specifically thanking HP Lovecraft in the book's dedication.
Actually I once used Hellboy in a story.
"What the hell is that guy!?"
"Oh, he's a Man of Leng. They're a Plateu based people that are vaguely similiar to humans."
"It threw a car at that squid thing!"
"Yes. Rather silly. He'd do better using it as a hammer."

I always thought "Event Horizion" was a Warhammer movie about the first meeting of space traveling humans and Chaos.
I enjoyed the first half of "Event Horizon". It really seemed to be going somewhere. Then it crapped out. It was like the writer had painted himself into a corner and couldn't come up with a satisfying conclusion. So he just turned it into Hellraiser towards the end.
Or maybe cut back on the crystal meth, ketamine and Nyquil.Originally Posted by FunGuyfromYuggoth

The first question that popped in my head
"Are you a beautiful woman?"

We don't get to see it in the Uk until September or some such, so it wasn't at the forefront of my mind. Plus, there's a limit to the number of poll options - which was why I included an 'other' option. You didn't include Hellboy. I think it ought to be included, personally.
I disagree. And, well, it's *my* poll.My point is, any movie without a direct Lovecraft reference of some kind should not be included in this discussion
If someone wants to vote for Ghostbusters then that's fine by me. I'll just think they're a bit silly, that's all.
Well..That's what happens when you're trying to make a horror movie. You should read the book version sometime. Know that like 1 minute scene where you can only barely see the like..nasty sadistic orgy scene from the Captain's Log? Described in full detail baby. Yuck.Originally Posted by Spinning_Grave

I love to see people tie themsleves in knots. Firstly state that any movie without a Lovecraft reference isn't Lovecraftian. Then slag many of the movies that follow the HPL mould more closely than those featuring Lovercraftian namedrops. Then slag the films which do contain HPL references![]()
Everybody has a different idea of what a Lovercraftian film actually is. Some of us sensible types can actually distinguish between shitty namedrop Z-class movies (most of the above) and films which follow Lovecraftian themes - which is why 'The Thing' is a runaway winner![]()
Cheers.
Peter.
However, Hellboy makes a direct reference to Lovecraft in the very beginning when it takes a quote from the Vermis de Mysteries.Originally Posted by Willowhugger
You'll also note the movie with the most votes is a movie that is not directly associated with Lovecraft. I'm not sure why, but anytime anyone goes out to make a movie with the specific intent of Lovecraft in m mind, it usually ends up being complete shite.
We need a movie that is like LOTR is to the fantasy movie genre. Something that raises the bar by leaps and bounds. Too bad Peter Jackson isn't a Lovecraft fan as much as he is a Tolkien fan.
